Ku‘ulani Muise was raised on the Hawaiian island of Moloka‘i, as part of a hunting family. When the invasive, rapidly multiplying axis deer population began to threaten the state’s island ecosystems, she wanted to find a responsible solution. In 2020, she founded Maui Nui with her husband, Jake, to help restore balance on Maui with a field-to-table operation that harvests venison for local consumption. They now provide meat to local food banks and upscale restaurants, combating overpopulation in the deer community and providing food to the human one. Hungry Harvest Launched by founder Evan Lutz from his dorm room at the University of Maryland, Hungry Harvest works with farmers to salvage fruits and veggies that would be thrown away or left in the fields to rot because they’re not cute enough for the grocery aisle, or simply due to grower surplus. Subscribers get boxes of “rescued produce” delivered to their home, and the company donates reduced-cost boxes to people who use SNAP.
