Mood-Boosting Benefits ‘The Surprising Benefits Of Owning A Pet’ (April) came as no surprise to me. When my mother died two years ago, my siblings and I did not know how my father would cope as he was crippled by grief. My brother suggested we get him a rescue dog. Dad has always loved animals and we hoped that having a pet to care for would nudge him back to life. The effect was immediate. Humans need connection and Dad’s energy, caring nature and love of life was rekindled with the arrival of Russell. My siblings and I think that Russell saved his life.
