I enjoyed your article about the great whaleship Charles W. Morgan. My great-grandfather Abbott Pliny Smith owned the whaleship Mattapoisett. I’ve been told that the Mattapoisett was the sister ship to the Charles W. Morgan. The two vessels certainly look identical. Abbott inherited two whaleships from his father, who died young. One was the Mattapoisett, and the other was the Greyhound, which was a lot smaller. Abbott also produced the film Down to the Sea in Ships. After crude oil was discovered in Pennsylvania, the whaling industry all but came to an end. The Mattapoisett and the Greyhound were retired from whaling in 1920. electric outboards from elco

Elco Motor Yachts has launched a new line of electric outboards with the introduction of 5- and 7-hp equivalent models. A 9.9-hp motor will be available in January. The outboards are designed to meet a growing interest in clean, quiet, fuelefficient propulsion, says Elco senior sales manager Ted Norris. The company anticipates a strong response from boaters on lakes that prohibit combustion engines, and saltwater sailors have taken interest, says Norris. “We just got back from the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis, and a number of people are interested in powering their sailboats or dinghies with our engines,” he says. “Some people are just tired of dealing with fuel filters and carb bowls.” The 5-hp is $2,910, the 7-hp $4,110 and the 9.9-hp $4,804. crewmember who died in ferry disaster honored

She was a 22-year-old crewmember and cafeteria worker who shone like a beacon in the chaos aboard the sinking South Korean ferry Sewol. She remained at her post — passing out life jackets, helping passengers make their way on deck, giving up her own life jacket, ultimately losing her life — while the captain and many other crewmembers cut and ran. fair winds or foul: tough times for some tall ships

The Ocean Classroom Foundation, a nonprofit sail-training organization that closed its doors at summer’s end after 20 years of educating students at sea, has sold its tall ships — Harvey Gamage, Spirit of Massachusetts and Westward — to operators who plan to put one, maybe two, of the schooners back on the water in semester-at-sea programs and the third into service as a dockside attraction in southern Maine. Meanwhile, Connecticut’s attorney general has placed Amistad, Connecticut’s tall ship, which Ocean Classroom managed for 20 months, under a private receiver who is tasked with helping the ailing nonprofit untangle its finances.
