WAVE OF SUPPORT June 3, 2020 Encinitas, California As Black Lives Matter protests took place around the country, a group of surfers assembled at Moonlight State Beach to send a message of solidarity. At a different paddle out (a Hawaiian tradition to honor a lost life) in Santa Monica, California, surfers in the Pacific Ocean arranged their boards in the shape of a heart. BUTTERFLY EFFECT May 24, 2020 Louisville, Kentucky How’s an Olympic swimmer supposed to train when she can’t use a pool? By improvising. Kelsi Dahlia, who won a gold medal at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, built a small pool in her backyard. It has a harness that allows her to practice her specialty stroke, the butterfly. the best sports haven’t been invented yet

AS YOU PROBABLY noticed in those last three pages, my colleagues are desperately trying to “reboot” sports. Have you ever heard the phrase “you can’t put lipstick on a pig?” We have a similar saying around the SI Kids treehouse: “You can’t put a jet pack on a baseball player.” O.K., it’s not really a saying, but I just said it. Well, I wrote it. Whatever, you get the point! The point is: There’s no need to future-proof modern sports. The best sports ever have yet to be invented … and I can prove it! old man advantage

WINNER: MONTREAL When the NHL season paused, the Canadiens were 10 points out of a playoff spot with 11 games to go. Now they’re in the qualifying round, set to face Pittsburgh. The Habs are no pushovers. Montreal led the East in shot attempt percentage (54.4%). The break should help veterans Carey Price (near right) and Shea Weber (far right). WINNER: COLORADO The Avs have a bye in the play-in round and a chance to grab the West’s No. 1 seed in round-robin play. They also get a slew of players back from injury: Nazem Kadri (right), Philipp Grubauer, Matt Calvert, Mikko Rantanen, and Nathan MacKinnon. LOSER: EDMONTON The Oilers had the fourth-most points in the West but are the No. 5 seed, which puts them in the play-in round. Worse news: They’re facing a…
