gold coast paddle for ella

THE WHOLE CONCEPT CAME UP IN A CONVERSATION WHEN I RETURNED FROM RACING IN WA FROM KING OF THE CUT. WE, ANDREW MURLING AND MYSELF, HAD HEARD THAT JOHN ENGEL’S (A GREAT GUY AND A STAUNCH SUPPORTER OF EVERYTHING SUP) DAUGHTER, ELLA’S CONDITION HAD WORSENED AND WAS THAT SHE WAS BEDRIDDEN IN HOSPITAL WITH HER DEBILITATING DISEASE ME, MYALGIC ENCEPHALOMYELITIS. ME IS A DISEASE CHARACTERISED BY PROFOUND FATIGUE, SLEEP, ABNORMALITIES, PAIN AND OTHER SYMPTOMS THAT ARE MADE WORSE BY EXERTION. Andrew came up with the idea to do a 12hour non-stop paddle to raise some much needed funds for the Engel family in a time of need. Our original idea was to paddle 12 hours nonstop but then we set ourselves a challenge to paddle 100km within the 12 hours. All…

noic garioud puts on a masterclass, karla gilbert wins title #7 and a 13 year old shocks the veterans!

Noic “Chicken” Garioud and Karla Gilbert have claimed the 12 Towers ocean race today, with more than 150 paddlers enjoying a firing downwind run along Queensland’s famed Gold Coast to cap off a big weekend at Australia’s premiere paddling event. Nobody got near Noic–the New Caledonian was in a league of his own. It was a masterclass. A clinic. A dominant performance from a 17-year-old athlete who shows maturity well beyond his years both on and off the water. Noic was reading the bumps so well that he probably took fewer paddle strokes than anyone else in the race. Speaking of young guns, 19-year-old Ty Judson tackled the towers this weekend and came out looking very strong. He was victorious in the surf race yesterday and runner-up today — he also…

foiling 100km for bushfire relief…

Foiling 90km downwind for the Bushfires was Marcus Tardrew’s bright idea, he couldn’t afford to contribute the amount he wanted to so decided the best way raise the funds was to do something crazy or inspirational. The Australian summer has been ravaged by natural disasters this year, Drought then Bushfires sparking up in spring and decimating native bushland and towns along the way and most recently Flooding. Just about everyone on the East coast of Australia has been affected by the fires whether it be thick smoke choking cities to loss of homes. Over 10,000 million hectares have been burnt, mostly national parks, but people’s homes and communities burnt to the ground as well. It’s been grim to say the least. Marcus announced he was planning to do this mission of a…

go foil australia

Dylan Henry FIRSTLY, CONGRATULATIONS DYLAN ON BEING THE APPOINTED DISTRIBUTOR FOR THE GO FOIL BRAND IN AUSTRALIA! Thanks mate, I’m super stoked to be taking it on. CAN YOU PLEASE GIVE US YOUR HISTORY IN THE SUP/FOILING FIELDS FOR OUR READERS, SO THEY CAN UNDERSTAND YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE PRODUCT YOU’RE SELLING? Well as you know I’ve been in the SUP scene since the start back when C4 Waterman was around. Many people know me from the early days of BAYSUP which was my company based in Newcastle and Port Stephens. Further leading into becoming the International Brand Manager of ECS Boards till 2019 when I decided to call it quits, travel with Sophie then came home to kick off SUP Newcastle and GoFoil Australia. The First time I tried foiling was on a GoFoil…

push, pull, hinge and squat

These days gym programs are getting more and more complex. People are trying to go crazy with bands, bosu balls and breathing training. Whilst these are all helpful in their own way – people starting out in the strength and conditioning world will get more bang for buck from the KISS principle (keep it simple, stupid!) If we look at a typical SUP stroke, there are a few key components. The catch, the power phase, release, recovery and the reach. Realistically, applying the KISS principle again, I just break it down into the catch, power and recovery phases for newer paddlers. If we think about breaking down these movements, we have a fairly light, fast unweighted chest press (push) movement in the recovery phase – to bring the paddle back to the…

george shillito and jay haysey

They took part in an endurance race which was a 92km race across the whole of Scotland (they won 1st and 2nd place) in the Great Glen Challenge for the inflatable SUP class! They have some good insights into paddling for endurance etc. DRAWING ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE LOOKING TO TAKE ON A SUP ENDURANCE RACE? Jay Haysey: I would suggest you make sure you can give yourself the time to train for it, at least 3 months prior. This will make your whole race experience more enjoyable and hopefully less painful. You don’t need to be an amazing paddle boarder to compete in these events. I would say you just need to be confident. There were some paddlers out there who wanted to do…
