BOATING SEASON IS ABOUT TO HIT FULL STRIDE, and who isn’t ready for some fun on the water? Where I live in the Northeast, we had our first real winter in years. My shoulders are still sore from the shoveling. But now, the weather is warm, the days are getting longer, and if you’re reading these pages, you know that time on a boat is about as good as it gets. ¶ My inbox is chock-full of new models coming out this spring and beyond, and I’m amazed at how builders, yacht designers and naval architects are dreaming up more and more ways to connect us to the water. They’re creating new types of access and developing a complete sensory experience for yachting enthusiasts. ¶ These design trends started a…

SCOTT SMITH, THE MARKETING MANAGER at Formula Boats, was among the first to get a taste of the on-water action. Back in February, as Mercury Marine was preparing to unveil its new 600 hp Verado outboard engine, Smith had a chance to get aboard the prototype Formula 500 Super Sport Crossover shown here with four of the outboards installed. ¶ “This is a wild package, with a steerable lower gear case and a two-speed transmission, a product that is the result of a clean-slate, ground-up design,” he said at the time. “Let me tell you, this power package is strong and smooth and quiet and unique.” ¶ Since then, accolades have only grown louder for the new outboards, which other builders are embracing as well. Tiara Yachts, for instance, chose…

GALEON’S 325 GTO (Grand Touring Outboard) is the latest Tony Castro design and the builder’s first outboard vessel. Castro’s UK firm is known for fast ocean-sailing vessels and glitzy superyachts, and has designed motoryachts for Galeon for more than a decade. Rumor has it that Galeon and Castro sent 90 versions of the 325 GTO’s drawings back and forth with US dealer MarineMax before agreeing on the final design. ¶ The 325 GTO shares plenty of DNA with Galeon’s larger yachts, including such features as “beach mode,” where the port gunwale folds out to create an open cockpit. These fold-down sides are more common on dayboats, but this is a first for a 32-footer, according to the builder. ¶ I ran the prototype 325 GTO out of MarineMax’s facility in…

THE SESSA MARINE KL40 is the flagship of the builder’s Key Largo line, drawn by Sessa Marine and Centrostile Design. The KL 40 has a forward sunbathing zone, two berths, and a cockpit that transforms into an entertainment area thanks to electro hydraulic drives that lower topside sections. The boat is powered by three outboards that deliver up to 1,275 horsepower and 55-knot top speeds, according to the builder. Options include hull color and a carbon-fiber T-top. ⚫ Whom It’s For: This fast whip is for owners who appreciate sporty rides and comfortable après-appointments. ⚫ Picture This: It’s a perfect morning off Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. You and your partner enjoy stiff espressos on the KL 40’s lowered side terraces before diving into North Sound’s bathtub-warm waters.…

THE RIVIERA 645 SUV IS DESIGNED TO BE A MASTER OF MANY things, including family cruising, watersports and chasing fish—or even a little bit of all of it. ¶ From a cruising perspective, the Australian builder’s new SUV-series flagship can be set up with a three- or four-stateroom layout. In either scenario, the master stateroom is full-beam and amidships. Hullside windows flank the room, creating ocean views while bringing natural light into the space. A settee to port makes a cozy nook for reading a book on the hook. ¶ There is a step-up island berth in the forepeak VIP stateroom. Abaft the VIP and to port, the third stateroom has twin berths for the kids. Across is the fourth stateroom for two more. There are three heads. In the…
