samsung reveals folding galaxy phone

After more than an hour of tiring Bixby announcements, cursory Galaxy Home details, and long-winded IOT speeches during the opening keynote to its developers conference, Samsung finally showed us what we were all waiting for: its new folding phone. Except it wasn’t really a phone at all. Samsung’s big innovation is the Infinity Flex display, and we still don’t know much about what Samsung is going to do with it. Senior vice president Justin Denison waxed poetic about an advanced composite polymer and reduced thickness that paves the way for rollable displays, foldable phones, and thinner handsets. Except he didn’t actually show us any of that. The brief glimpse we got of the phone revealed a super thick handset with giant bezels and an obvious hinge. Presumably we were looking at a…

xiaomi redmi note 5

Price: £170 inc VAT from fave.co/2A5zm0M If you’re looking for a sub-£200 Android phone with a decent-size screen, good battery life and usable all-round performance and features, this could be it. Very similar to the Mi Max 3, but with a smaller 5.99in display, the Redmi Note 5 is a worthy upgrade over the Note 4 with improved performance, photography and design. This is the Global version of the Redmi Note 5, which comes with all Google services preinstalled along with MIUI 9. It supports all 4G LTE bands used in the UK, too, which can be a problem with some Chinese handsets. Design There are some key design changes in the Redmi Note 5 over its predecessor, but also a return to the Redmi Note 3’s part plastic build – the antenna…

xiaomi mi 8 pro

Price: £499 inc VAT from fave.co/2QrVigY Readers of Android Advisor will be familiar with Xiaomi, but until now its handsets have only been available as imports from sites such as Gearbest or Geekbuying. Now the firm is entering the UK market. With its Mi 8 Pro among the first devices to launch in the UK, market leaders Samsung and Apple have every reason to be worried. Costing significantly less than its UK rivals at £499, it is every bit as fast and stylish, with decent cameras and one feature missing in the Galaxy S9: the in-display fingerprint sensor. So it doesn’t have a waterproof casing, nor wireless charging support. And its display is only Full-HD+. But it’s difficult to hold any of these things against the Mi 8 Pro when you consider its…

motorola one

Price: £269 inc VAT from fave.co/2QrVigY We’re accustomed to Motorola’s vast range of phones, including the Moto Z3 and excellent Moto G6. The One is something different – it’s a standalone handset that aims to offer flagship design at a mid-range price. It’s confusing as to how the One fits into the line-up, as Motorola’s other phones use a letter grading system from C to Z. This doesn’t and the tag line ‘be ready for anything’ doesn’t give anything away, either. The standout features appear to be the choice of Android One and the fact it’s the first Motorola phone to have a notch. Design In the smartphone market as a whole, the notch is nothing new, considering the iPhone X was released well over a year ago now. It is, however, new…

lenovo smart display

Price: £199 inc VAT from fave.co/2DJNVdI Amazon put a screen on an Echo device in June 2017, with the Echo Show (though it took a few months longer to reach the UK). Now, more than a year later, Google has finally caught up, partnering with third-party manufacturers to build its own Echo Show rivals powered by Google Assistant, in addition to its own Google Home Hub. LG, JBL, and other manufacturers have all developed Google Assistant devices with displays, but the most impressive third-party option so far is the Lenovo Smart Display. Display At first glance, the Lenovo Smart Display looks a lot like a tablet with an oversized speaker grille at one end – either the left-hand side or the bottom, depending on which orientation you choose. From the back though, there’s an…
