spring forward

SPRING! To echo the emergence of a new season—and perhaps to celebrate an extra hour of sunlight each day—our March issue explores the brighter notes of interior design, and also embraces our connections to outdoor “rooms.” In Buckhead, just beyond the boundaries of the Atlanta History Center, a pair of garden-loving homeowners create a backyard sanctuary (page 110) that feels miles away from a bumper-to-bumper West Paces Ferry thanks to a Doric-columned, mirrored arch folly that enjoys pride of place. In Brookwood Hills, an extensive renovation, both inside and out, lives large courtesy of happy hues, overscale prints and a rear courtyard that reads more like a resort, thanks to a mix of landscaping, hardscaping and sculpture. And, right along Peachtree Road, a veteran designer cultivates a refined retreat for a…

ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: ARE THE TALES TRUE THAT THIS ENTIRE COLLECTION CAME TOGETHER IN SIX MONTHS? Justin Van Breda: The ideas came to me simultaneously. I have known the Cape Town Society my entire life, and I wanted to create a furniture collection that gives back. The rattan and caned medium is so appealing, familiar and also sustainable. So it worked. AH&L: HOW DID YOU BALANCE HIGH DESIGN WITH LOCAL CRAFTS? Van Breda: Most of the pieces are made entirely by hand and from start-to-finish by a single weaver. It was important to me that the collection tells a story, is of high quality and has a sense of humor. AH&L: RATTAN. TELL US, IS IT BETTER FOR THE PORCH OR WOULD YOU USE IT INDOORS? Van Breda: Of course, each of the pieces…

CALIFORNIA COOL Leave it to SERENA & LILY to make a porch swing even more chic and comfortable. Resin that looks like wicker clads the Springwood Hanging Daybed’s aluminum frame to ensure its durability while the generous, nearly twin-bed-sized cushion comes upholstered in Sunbrella fabric. Hang it somewhere that shows off the subtle checkerboard weave on the swing’s back. Available at Serena & Lily Design Shop, 1198 Howell Mill Rd., (404) 491-7577; serenaandlily.com EASYGOING FABRICS PETER DUNHAM TEXTILES just introduced even more outdoor versions of some of his most popular fabrics, like this textured striped Majorelle pattern, which is woven with 100% Sunbrella yarns (shown here as pillows in the colorways Black on Indigo and Indigo on Ruby). nature's glamour

ORIGINS From ancient Rome, to formal French and English gardens, to Asian feng shui, to contemporary carpets of fescue surrounding infinity pools, people have had a love affair with garden ornamentation. Spanning continents and millennia, enhancing gardens with ornaments has proved to be one of the few decorative arts that has transcended time and place. For some, garden ornamentation is best when it is indigenous to the place. Japanese rock gardens originated in the 8th century, but little has changed in today’s Zen gardens in the use of sand, rocks and moss. Alternatively, both the ancient Romans and the 18th-century English showed enormous appreciation for the artistic endeavors of human hands. Water features were common in Roman gardens, while the architectural garden folly flourished across English estates. MODERN APPLICATIONS The range of garden ornamentation…

IF YOU EVER THOUGHT commercial real estate investing was just for corporate entities, think again. With a just-launched program called Jamestown Invest, U.S.-based individuals can invest as little as $2,500 to own a piece of Jamestown’s portfolio across a range of national markets, including Atlanta. “Jamestown Invest is creating an inclusive and open community of investors, and provides a unique investment opportunity,” says Jamestown president Michael Phillips. “We understand the value and importance of community and collaboration.” The company, which owns Ponce City Market and NYC’s Chelsea Market, offers opportunities to invest locally in their Southern Dairies campus and the Upper Westside Portfolio, which features 223,000-plus square feet of space. TRADING UP A POST-RETIREMENT or downsize move used to mean shifting into a condo or even a retirement community, but Atlanta builders…
