beading and the big blue pearl

FIND THE BEAD STRAND Join the fun! Find the hidden picture of a bead strand (exactly like the one at right) and email me by May 5 with the page number the strand is on (put “Find the Bead Strand” in the subject line). We’ll pick a name at random the following week to win a copy of Sherry Serafini’s new book, Inspired Bead Emroidery. Good luck! Congratulations to Susan Farbstein of Flossmoor, IL, who found the strand on p. 85 of the December issue! April 22 is Earth Day which got me thinking about the carbon footprint of beading. I’m not sure how it could be calculated, as we use so many different tools and types of beads. But a quick internet search on the topic suggests that since the glass…

what’s happening

Gaga for Swarovski It’s not just you. Look who else loves the effects that Swarovski crystals offer: Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (a.k.a. Lady Gaga). During her last world tour, the performer incorporated “nearly 550,000 Swarovski crystals, adorning everything from ensembles and props to make-up, culminating in a show-stopping spectacle of shimmering light,” Swarovski representatives tell us. have fun with vinyl!

Q I love bead-embroidered cuffs, but covering the entire surface of a cuff with beads is time consuming. Any ideas? A Yes, dear reader, there is a perfect solution. Vinyl! SUGGESTED TYPES I first came across a bunch of vinyl samples at a garage sale and was intrigued by the variety. I thought, why not use vinyl as the base for a cuff, which would allow one to take advantage of all it has to offer and not have to bead the entire surface. First, vinyl is available in myriad colors and surface textures, including leather-look, metallics, and patent leather; Second, it cuts easily and stitching through it is like going through butter; Third, it is inexpensive yet durable. Vinyl comes in several weights: Upholstery vinyl is medium weight while clothing vinyl is thinner…
