the good life

From the spacious living areas and multipurpose media room to the inviting swimming pool flanked by a well-equipped cabana, this is a home designed for easy living. Light-filled and airy, it is home to a professional couple with two young girls and a testament to the design skills of Michael Sasso, director of Aspect Designs, as well as the construction expertise of Chris Earle, managing director of Building Excellence Australia. The family had purchased a site in Bella Vista, an outer, north-western suburb of Sydney, but the shape of the land made it difficult for them to proceed with their original plan, which was to adapt a project home design. They soon realised this approach wasn’t going to work, so they decided the only solution was a custom design. Explains Michael, “The…

dream come true

To build their client’s dream house, the directors of Starr Constructions, Jon Vithoulka and Nino Sanzari, needed to draw on their extensive experience. The site wasn’t easy to work with as it had a significant slope and a dated cottage which needed to go, but once the old dwelling was removed and extensive excavation carried out to create a workable environment, the site was ready for building. The client requested lots of space as well as accommodation for family and guests, so plans for this home included a large body of work. A grand footprint incorporated five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a theatre room, dining room, family room, large garage with extra storage, a lounge patio/barbecue area, and an in-ground pool that can be seen from the kitchen, dining and family room…

ticking all the boxes

The owners of this new forever family wanted it all — open-plan living spaces, an airy, light-filled interior, plenty of room for visiting friends and relatives, and a facade that made a striking first impression. Located in Putney, just 10 minutes north-west of Sydney, this home ticks each and every box. As their children were getting older and their needs were changing, the owners decided the time was finally right to build a home that would provide their family with a comfortable life, now and in the future. To give form to their vision of a tranquil, Zenlike home — one that would welcome in the sun and sky and seamlessly connect to the outdoors — they engaged experienced custom builders, Starr Constructions. “The homeowners wanted a family home where they could…

natural beauty

An impressive scale and immense presence accompany Waimarie, a powerhouse in Melbourne’s southeastern suburbs. From ironbark screening, spotted gum bookcases and cedar eave linings to Peninsula stone and limestone brickwork, the use of natural materials such as stone and timber is central to the design and character of the home. Entering the retirement phase of their lives, the owners noted their partiality for the organic simplicity and classical nature that defines the work of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. They requested earthy tones via material selection and colours. “From the outset, with attention to maintaining trees and vegetation during demolition, through to the finite detail of aspects such as the travertine panelling and bespoke staircase, this build demonstrates superior craftsmanship at every turn,” explains Steven Hedger, director of Hedger Constructions. “Where required,…

luxe living

If you’re seeking a luxe lifestyle and favour the Art Deco look, the Chevron 37 is ideal. Boasting four bedrooms and three separate sitting areas, it has all the space a growing family needs and ticks the box for timeless elegance. Think a modern interpretation of The Great Gatsby with bold Art Deco wallpaper and pops of black and gold — a grand look for a home of grand proportions. The epitome of panache, MOJO Homes’ Chevron 37 has ample room for a family of five or more. While creating a home that could comfortably accommodate a large family was an essential part of the design brief, so was ensuring it would easily fit a 12.5m-wide lot. Narrow-width lots are becoming an increasing fact of life, and this smartly designed home…
