time is of the essence

Ashooting experience the other day reminded me about just what an important aspect time is in photography. Of course, it’s a key component of an exposure, but what I’m talking about here is the time needed for preparation… and it can make the difference between getting a great result and messing it up completely. I’d planned to shoot a sunset at a favourite location not very far from my home in the Blue Mountains. This vantage point looks out over a valley (well, actually most of them do around here) and if the clouds are right, it can be spectacular. It was a very windy day so the clouds were on the move, which had the potential to be even better. My first time-related issue was not actually checking the time…

leica launches 40mp rgb digital m

THE LEGENDARY LEICA M line of rangefinder cameras continues with the launch of the M10-R. The new camera shares the same body and basic feature set of the 24MP M10, but has a 40.8MP full-frame sensor that's essentially the colour version of M10 Monochrom’s CMOS imager. It brings the M10 family up to five models, joining the M10, M10-P, M10-D and M10 Monochrom. To squeeze out even more performance, the M10-R’s sensor doesn’t have an optical low-pass filter. The native sensitivity range is equivalent to ISO 100 to 50,000, and JPEGs can be captured in one of three image sizes while RAW films are recorded in the Adobe DNG format with 14-bit colour at 7864x5200 pixels. As with the standard model, there’s no provision for recording video, so the M10-R goes…

fixed asset?

SO, WHAT DO you think about Canon’s fixed-aperture f/11 supertelephoto primes for its EOS R mirrorless camera system? Brave? Foolish? Or spot on the money in today’s camera market? It’s certainly a very brave move given our current obsession with ever-faster lenses, but if you start to delve a bit deeper into Canon’s thinking here, it’s certainly a much smarter idea than you might initially think. Supertelephoto lenses with wider apertures are big, heavy and very, very expensive. They’re effectively beyond the budget of many non-professional photographers and the weight, in particular, makes them very problematic when it comes to air travel. One lens alone could blow your carry-on limit, but who would ever be brave enough to assign such a valuable piece of equipment to the cargo hold? Consequently, this is…

eos r5 and eos r6 – all is revealed

YOU’D HAVE TO say that since the launch in September 2018, Canon’s progress with its full-frame mirrorless camera system has been slow and steady, especially compared to the activities of, for example, Sony or Fujifilm. So… now prepare for lift off. Canon has been releasing snippets about its EOS R5 flagship for around four months which was, apparently, a bit longer than anticipated due to issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic. But now the EOS R5 is here – much more highly specced than even Canon’s hints had suggested – and it’s accompanied by an enthusiast-level sibling, the EOS R6. Canon Australia’s senior product manager, Brendan Maher, describes the next step in the EOS R system’s development as “a bit of crescendo for us” and says it represents the culmination of…

brief exposures

OLYMPUS has released a utility program for computers running Windows 10 which will enable a number of its OM-D system mirrorless cameras to operate as webcams. The supported cameras are the E-M1X, E-M1 Mark III, E-M1 Mark II, E-M1 and E-M5 Mark II. The free download is available at https://learnandsupport.getolympus.com/olympus-om-d-webcam-beta. LEICA has released the promised firmware upgrade that adds an ultrahigh resolution multi-shot capture mode to the SL2 full-frame mirrorless camera. The new ‘Multishot’ mode captures eight frames made with half-pixel shifts to give an image size of 187MB in the Adobe DNG RAW format. The camera also simultaneously captures an image at the sensor’s effective resolution of 47MP. The firmware upgrade also adds a couple of minor feature additions and corrections for bugs, including improved detection of M mount lenses…

fujifilm adds prime wide-angle to gf system

FUJIFILM HAS EXPANDED its GF mount lens system to 11 with the arrival of the Fujinon GF30mm f/3.5 R WR prime wideangle. On the ‘44x33’ medium format sensor, it has an effective focal length of 24mm. The GFX medium format mirrorless camera system now numbers nine primes spanning 23mm (equivalent to 18mm) to 250mm (198mm) and three zooms, including a 100-200mm (79-158mm). The new GF30mm f/3.5 lens has a 13-element optical construction (in 10 groups), including two aspherical types and two made from optical glass with extra-low dispersion characteristics (to correct for chromatic aberrations). It has internal focusing which, Fujifilm says, minimises focus breathing down to just 0.05% to ensure the focal length doesn’t noticeably vary at close-up subject distances. The minimum subject distance is 32cm. There’s a nine-blade diaphragm for…
