just one small thing

THE ARRIVAL OF OLYMPUS’S NEW OM-D flagship – which is already making quite a splash – got me thinking again about the whole topic of camera size. Essentially, right from the start of photography, the idea has been to build ever-smaller cameras so you don’t end up looking like Frank Hurley in that famous photograph of him slogging through an Antarctic blizzard weighed down not just by a massive wooden plate camera, but also a portable darkroom. Perspiration, as they say, is inversely proportional to inspiration. Over the century-and-a-half of photochemical photography, the basic progression has been from full plate to half-plate (6.5x8.5 inches), quarter-plate, sheet film from 8x10-inchs to 4x5-inches, two-and-a-quarter square (a.k.a. 6x6cm), 6x4.5cm, 35mm, half-frame 35mm, 110 and disc… the latter two getting a bit ahead of themselves…

fujifilm adds first telezoom to gfx system

THE FIRST TELEPHOTO zoom lens for Fujifilm’s digital medium format mirror-less camera system has arrived in the shape of the GF 100-200mm f5.6 R LM OIS WR. It has a 35mm-equivalent focal range of 79-158mm and can be used with the GFX system’s 1.4x teleconverter to give an effective focal length of 111-221mm. It brings the number of Fujinon GF mount lenses up to nine. The new GF 100-200mm zoom’s optical construction comprises 20 elements in 13 groups, including two Super ED types (extra-low dispersion) to counter chromatic aberrations and one aspherical type to correct for distortion and field curvature. Built-in optical image stabilisation gives up to five stops of correction for camera shake. The minimum focusing distance is 60 centimetres at 100mm and 1.6 metres at 200mm. The minimum aperture…

Once in a while – and it doesn’t happen very often – you get the very strong impression that a new camera has importance far beyond simply what it can do. And the Olympus OM-D E-M1X can do a helluva lot, but it’s making some bold statements about, specifically, its creator and, more generally, the Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera format. leica’s m10-p goes on safari

ORIGINALLY INTRODUCED FOR wildlife and bird photographers, the ‘Safari’ Leicas have now become limited editions with the latest being a run of 1500 M10-P digital rangefinder camera bodies finished in an olive green enamel. A matching Leica Summicron-M 50mm f2.0 Edition ‘Safari’ standard lens is available separately, but clearly you’re going to want this as well, aren’t you? Incidentally, it is the first ever M lens in the history to be produced in olive-green enamel finish, and just 500 will be made. Being a ‘P’ version of the M10, the Safari edition goes without the famous Leica ‘red dot’ logo on its front, and has classic scripting on the top plate. nikon unveils z mount ultra-wide zoom

NIKON HAS STARTED delivering on the promises of more Z mount lenses made when it launched its full-35mm mirrorless system in 2018. The new arrival is a 14-30mm f4.0 ultra-wide zoom which joins the three existing ‘S Line’ high-performance models. The Nikkor Z 14-30mm f4.0 S is interesting for a number of reasons, not the least being its comparatively compact length of 85 millimetres and modest weight of just 485 grams. Yet it employs heavy-duty magnesium alloy barrel tubes and is fully weather-proofed to the standard of the current Nikon Z series camera bodies. Additionally, the exposed surfaces of the front and rear elements have a fluorine coating to help better repel moisture and grease, and also allow for easier cleaning. panasonic reveals full lumix s specs

ANNOUNCED AT LAST year’s Photokina and due to go on sale locally during April, Panasonic’s all-new Lumix S full-35mm format mirrorless camera system will launch with two bodies and three L mount lenses. With Lumix S, Panasonic will start competing with Sony, Canon, Nikon and fellow L Mount Alliance member Leica in the full-35mm mirrorless category. Thanks to the alliance, L mount lenses are already available from Leica (at a price, of course) with more promised soon from the third member, Sigma. The Lumix S bodies are designated S1 and S1R, with Panasonic following Nikon’s policy of offering two identically styled and featured models but with different resolution sensors and associated specs.
