March can be a pretty bleak time of the year – but even as we’re shivering in rain and maybe even snow, let’s spare a thought for Australia, which could have done with some of our rain to put out those devastating bush fires. The weather may feel pretty dreadful here – but from a magical perspective, it does have its uses. Find out what they are on p14. If you’re into witchcraft, you’re not alone – check out our feature on p32 about young mums who are juggling spellcraft with the school run! And if you’re thinking of seeing a psychic or medium this month, maybe getting some advice from spirit or the Universe, you definitely need to read our article on p52 about getting the most from your reading. light fantastic

I was in Carcassonne sitting by the train station around two and a half years ago, eating lunch on a hot early afternoon, with a carafe of local red in the square. A light darted in front of me, rather like a Tinkerbell character. I couldn’t work out where it came from; it stopped me in my tracks as I was chatting, and it was almost playful. My daughter said, ‘Did you see that, Mum?’ Neither of us could explain it - there was no obvious light phenomenon, or reflection. It just played around us, then flew back the way it had come As soon as I saw it I thought it was my grandmother who had died some six months before that. Nothing obvious or logical led me to…

skeleton in the closet

Michele Morrow, 40, from USA Staring out of the car window, I sighed to myself. I was driving with my husband from Los Angeles to San Diego to visit my aunt and my mum. It was a long way - 120 miles, taking around two hours to drive - so it was a welcome distraction when my mobile phone rang. ‘Hey Jeny,’ I smiled as I put her on speakerphone. It was so great to hear my sister’s familiar voice. But Jeny didn’t sound like she’d just called for a quick chat. ‘Have you checked out the DNA test results?’ she asked, a strange wobble in her voice. I’d always been curious about my ancestry, so Jeny had bought me a DNA test for my 40th birthday. Now the results were in. ‘I’ve looked at the section…

it’s a family affair

My mum’s face lit up. ‘No way, Michele!’ she said excitedly. ‘I can’t believe you’ve found him – I’ve been looking for him!’ I stood there in shock as she explained the whole story. Dad had indeed been briefly married, but his work had taken him far from home. Although a difficult decision, he and his first wife had decided to divorce. When his first wife remarried, Dad thought it would cause the least disruption to Tim’s life if he was raised by his adopted father so he made a promise to himself not to reach out. Nobody could have dreamed of DNA tests back then. It was a different time. ‘But what should we do now?’ I asked Mum, when we’d calmed down a little. ‘I don’t want to cause any upset.’ ‘Let me…

separated at birth birth

Last year, singer KT Tunstall discovered that she had not one, but two long-lost sisters. The 44-year-old was the first ever celebrity to appear on ITV’s Long Lost Family, where she was told about her siblings Siobhan and Lesley-Anne. KT Tunstall was put up for adoption at just 18 days old, and didn’t find out until much later that her birth father, who’d been against the adoption, had gone on to have two more daughters. KT said: ‘To find these two extraordinary women who I look like, I feel like, I have a total kinship with, really share deep personality traits and certainly share world views with - I’m still pinching myself.’ And KT is by no means the only person to be reunited with long-lost family in extraordinary circumstances... Girls on…

did you know?

There’s a lot of folklore associated with twins – and not all of it is positive. The Amtambahoaka tribe of Madagascar believe raising twins brings misfortune, even death, to their families, and in the past, newborns would be taken out to the bush and left to die. Even today, the superstition around twins persists. However, twin deities crop up a lot in mythology, as they’re thought to represent the dualistic nature of the Universe – for example, in Greek mythology, twin gods Artemis and Apollo govern the moon and sun respectively.
