great escape replica ready for you to ride

The latest machine to emerge from the National Motorcycle Museum’s prolific restoration workshop is this replica of the Triumph twin used for that jump in the Steve McQueen film, The Great Escape. It’s pretty widely known that McQueen didn’t actually ride the bike for the jump sequence – that was handled by McQueen’s racing buddy, stuntman Bud Ekins – but it’s still an undeniably iconic scene from movie history. “So many people have seen the film,” says NMM director James Hewing, explaining the rationale behind building a replica. “We’ve been asked countless times whether the bike used in the film still exists and, if so, where it is. It’s full steam ahead for the classic scene after the season-starter at Staffordshire County Showground on 21-22 April. The International Classic Motorcycle Show is, for many, the unofficial kickstart to their year – and the bustling halls and grounds delivered the expected mix of live action, dazzling machinery and crusty parts. Saturday’s cheery weather made it the busier day of the weekend, with plenty of classic machinery in the bike park – the sights and sounds were a spectacle before you’d even got in. Through the gate and the noise, smells and action were supplied by the likes of trials demonstrations, race bikes with ear-splitting pipes in the startup area, and a cacophonous wall of death. motobecane benelli six prototype

Two curious bikes entered the 1977 Bol d’Or endurance race at Le Mans. The Benelli MOC prototypes were the work of Motobecane; the French firm is known for Mobylette mopeds, but it built motorcycles, raced in GPs and, at the time, was the Benelli importer for France. With poor sales for the six-cylinder Benelli 750 Sei, the idea was that taking part in the famous Bol d’Or would provide a retail boost. It was entrusted to Philipp Moch, a French sidecar racing hero also associated with Renault’s Formula One programme, who had just six months to design and build two racers around the big, not-so-reliable Benelli engine. ivan mauger 1939-2018

A little-known story shows exactly why Ivan Mauger stood out among speedway’s world-class crowd. It was played out in the pits at the 1970 World Final, when he eventually stood on the top step of the rostrum as the only man to win three world championships in a row. He watched as his Great Britain team-mate Trevor Hedge came a mighty purler in his third race, ending up battered, bruised and in such excruciating pain he couldn’t face up to going out in the re-run. Glancing at the programme, the New Zealander, who spent most of his professional life living and racing in Britain, saw that Hedge was due to be in his next race.
