welcome

mike@classicbike.co.uk Everyone expected a price like a phone number, however when bidding hit £652,414 even Bonhams must have been surprised. That’s the thick end of a million dollars. The Vincent Black Lightning in question has history – it’s the ex-Tony McAlpine and Jack Ehret land speed record bike – but it shows continued interest and growth in classics. More on page 6. Such treasures are beyond most piggy banks, so it was great to visit Cadwell for some BSA Bantam action – the most affordable classic racing (page 44). It leads a bevy of fascinating competition features, with the intriguing Mototemporada road races (page 66), the Gollner Cheetah (page 60) plus the story of Julian Wigg’s amazing BSA tracker (page 32). Out on the road we go for a ride in rush-hour Paris…

lightning strikes

It might have been half expected, with an estimate listed ominously as ‘refer to department’. However, the sale price for the ex-Tony McAlpine and Jack Ehret 1951 Vincent Black Lightning must surely have surpassed even Bonhams’ wildest dreams at their recent Las Vegas sale. The bidding finally stopped at $929,000 – that’s £652,414 and makes the speed record-breaking machine a record holder of another kind, as it became the most valuable bike ever to sell at auction. Bonhams’ international head of motorcycles, Ben Walker, told CB months ago, when the bike was consigned for the sale, that the five-owner machine is probably the second most important Vincent twin in the world after the Rollie Free ‘bathing suit’ bike. One of an estimated 19 surviving matching-number Vincent Black Lightnings from a production…

going dutch

Kenny ‘Von Dutch’ Howard was a complicated character who divided opinion during – and after – a life cut short by illness in 1992. Born the son of a Los Angeles signwriter in 1929, Howard was earning money as a pin-striper to the custom car movement by the age of 10. Developing a unique style, he was also a skilled mechanic, metal fabricator and sometime gunsmith, and he became an integral part of the Kustom Kulture scene. Though Howard’s artistic talent is undoubted, many contemporaries say he had a darker side. Robert Williams, one-time friend and fellow artist, said he could be, “quite a racist, didn’t like anyone.” Whatever the truth about the enigmatic Howard, his art has lived on – and 14 original Von Dutch artworks went under the hammer at…

a sale for everyman

The ownership of the Excelsior brand failed to change hands at Mecum’s spectacular five-day Las Vegas sale on January 23-27. Bidding for the manufacturing rights, trademarks and expired patents of the company reached $1.9 million, but the search for a new saviour for the iconic brand continues. But if budding entrepreneurs were in short supply, those keen to invest in some more tangible classic metal weren’t. Out of around 1300 bikes on offer, a mere 111 failed to find new homes. And the sale really did have something for everyone. At the top end of the scale, America-built machines performed well, with a beautifully-restored 1911 Harley-Davidson Model 7D making top price overall at $154,000 (£109,075). This example of the first year of Harley-Davidson’s twins is one of very few known to…
