“.... how can we give back to nature what was taken away from it during these centuries and, in particular, in the past decades?” This is the most important question that the chairman of the Triennale di Milano, Stefano Boeri, poses at the XXII International Expo with the exhibition, “Broken Nature: Design Takes on Human Survival”. Through architecture and design, it presents strategies that reinterpret the relationship between man and the environment in which he lives. In addition to about a hundred projects on the theme from recent decades, and works commissioned specifically to international designers, “La Nazione delle Piante”, curated by vegetable neurobiologist Stefano Mancuso, is also on display. This is a reading divided into five chapters on the kingdom of plants, paradoxically imagined as a nation, with rules completely…

sustainability first

This year Cashmere World and Materials+ were held concurrently with APLF 2019 in Hong Kong from 13th to 15th of March. Similarly to other events held during APLF, sustainability was an essential component of these exhibitions. “Cashmere as a luxury fibre deserves to be promoted in a sustainable and professional way,” insists Perrine Ardouin, Director of APLF. The consolidation of the supply chain and the demand for more creative designs are the other two major trends that marked the events. Sustainability is on everybody’s mind and is of particular significance to millennials, who are concerned about the transparency of the products they purchase. Another clear trend is the need for more creative and diverse designs along with increased fabric blends and mixes that sell in summer and thus extend the…

where are the creative geniuses of the future?

For some time now, and thanks to my long and fruitful experience in the world of materials, yarns, knitwear, and innovation, I have had an intense relationship with the students of the most prestigious fashion institutes in Italy and abroad. Fashion schools are a large training pool for young individuals who, in the future, will be developing new proposals in line with the demands of the markets, but also using the most advanced design and production technologies which are already available today but that will evolve quickly in the near future. The fashion world attracts many from this new generation who often, however, have expectations that are too ambitious and do not always realize the intense work that designing and creating a collection requires. Work that increasingly implies being part…

feel the yarn

Our daily life is dominated by technology and science but, at the same time, we are longing for personal emotional and sensorial experiences. Technology and science are the tools that allow us to explore new worlds and be inspired by the digital scene. Textures, designs, and colours will be dynamic, energetic, and glamorous. Emotion and senses will influence our choice of materials, enhancing a pleasant touch, lightness and layering, subtly blurred shades and delicate luminosity, finding luxury in simplicity. The co-creations emerging from these contradictory concepts will represent our individual creative expression. Synchronizing emotional and artificial intelligence, developing visionary jacquards. Working with asymmetric shapes. Mixing natural fibres and synthetic materials. Introducing metal reflections, elastic exaggerated 3D textures. Hybridizing surfaces through coatings, needle-punching, overprinting. Modifying touch by bonding, doubling, rubberizing, enameling etc. Colours should have a great personality, whether in monochromatic or…
