Drum English

25-Jul-19

In the 1950's, DRUM was a pioneer of black journalism bringing together courageous investigative journalism and cutting-edge photojournalism for Africa. But DRUM isn't just about history. South Africa has changed a lot in the last 50 years, and DRUM has kept pace with these changes. Today it is a thoroughly modern magazine in touch with its readers. Our recipe for success is simple but effective: we give our readers what they want.

outdated ritual

The cultural practice of ukuthwala in which parents force their daughters to marry men of their choice, who their daughters do not even love, is not right. Young women have the right to make their own choice as to who they want to marry. It’s their democratic right to do so. Parents should have no right to choose a man for their daughter to marry. This old cultural practice is evil and barbaric in today’s democracy. It violates the dignity and integrity of our human rights and must not be allowed to continue. ANDRIES RORO KABINI, HEBRON THE WINNING LETTER RECEIVES R300. Letters should be about 100 words. Write to us at PO Box 653284, Benmore 2010, email us at letters@drum.co.za or SMS short letters to 36489. Start with the word DRUMLETTERS. Each SMS costs R1.…

ed's note

BEATING HIV IF EVER there was a story that proves knowing your HIV status is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your family, it’s our story on page 18. The KwaZulu-Natal town of Eshowe has smashed a goal set by the United Nations Programme on HIV/Aids (UNAIDS), which aims to end the Aids epidemic by 2020, through a campaign known as 90-90-90. In Eshowe, 90% of HIV-positive residents know their status, 90% of those are on antiretroviral treatment and 90% of them have suppressed the virus to the level where it can’t be detected or transmitted. What’s even more impressive, they reached this goal a year ahead of the 2020 target. This is an absolutely remarkable achievement and, if they can do it, so can others. Until next week, THE…

brilliant boity

HER list of accomplishments is long: model, presenter, actress, businesswoman, musician. And, most recently, appearing on Forbes Africa’s 30 Under 30 list. The annual list, which this year showcased 120 young African game-changers, is an honour Boity Thulo has been chasing for a while now – and the taste of success is sweet. “I feel very grateful,” she says. “It was just in time because I’m 29. This would have been my last year. It’s more special because being on 30 under 30 has been on my vision board since 2017. “I’m inspired to do more.” What’s next for her? “I’m releasing my single, Own Your Throne, next month,” Boity says, referring to the phrase she often uses on social media. “So that’s something cool to look forward to.” Of course, becoming a game-changer requires plenty…
