“read all about it – and get as ridiculously excited as i am…”

There was a time, following the release of the excellent Middle-earth: Shadow Of Mordor, when every games journalist was convinced its innovative Nemesis System (which saw randomly-generated orc captains build a personal history with the player) was going to be stolen by every development studio going. We were going to be flooded with enemy simulators by 2017, we reassured each other confidently. “Mark my words – next time you’re playing Tetris, an ugly, scarred-up block will appear and tell you he’s back for revenge for clearing him on level one.” As ever, we were proved about as prescient as a goldfish in a coma. For three long years, we’ve been left bereft. But now the masters return, to take another swing at their own brilliant concept – and with Shadow Of War,…

team gm

THE MOST DEDICATED TEAM IN THE BUSINESS Inspired by Shadow Of War, the GM team set out this month to find their own nemeses. One box of eggs thrown at Official PlayStation Magazine later and they finally knew the thrill of having true enemies. Ben Griffin A fortnight on jury duty was no problem for Ben, who’s used to dishing out clear, concise verdicts on all the latest games. Trying to give a defendant 33% baffled the other jurors, though. Final score: 11 angry men, and one rather confused one. What would you do with your own orc army? Make them all follow me on Twitter. Rob Crossland Our feature on games telly (p46) had Rob happily reminiscing about watching GamesMaster when he was at school. Until he started weeping when youthful Robin said he’d never watched…

letter of the month

Firstly, I would like to congratulate you on such a fantastic read each month. I was going to cancel my subscription when ONM ended but I am glad I stayed and discovered GamesMaster in its place! I am no fanboy by any stretch of the imagination. I appreciate a good game no matter what the format. I have many consoles but for some reason or another have never played a Sony console – and I can’t really say I have ever felt the need to. But I am starting to get a bit disheartened that a game you guys either preview or review that I like the sound of always seem to be PS4 exclusive – even the LEGO games seem to be favouring Sony’s latest console offering. Games like The…

Poor score Reading your Switch reviews last issue I was glad to see Zelda get such a deservingly high score. However, on turning the page, I was filled with disappointment to see 1-2-Switch fall into the ‘poor’ category [54%]. Whilst it’s certainly not perfect, and everything is subject to opinion, I think there’s some great stuff in it that you didn’t mention. Ball Roll comes to mind as a great display of the HD Rumble – all who’ve played it with me swear they can feel tiny balls rolling around inside the Joy-Con! Sword Fight is another highlight as you feel every clash of blades, releasing your inner Maximus. You didn’t even mention the simple yet effective Quick Draw! Some games are duds (I’ve never gotten close to making Plate Spin work) but…

question time

If there was a game based in your home town, what would it be about? Hemel Hempstead was designed to house Londoners displaced by the Blitz, so my game would be about building nice homes. Recruit enough people to make it England’s new capital! Ben Griffin, Senior Staff Writer Grand Theft Auto: Salisbury City. Where the grass is freshly mown and the A36 is busy! Martyn Leroy, Facebook How many cars you can park in a cul-de-sac. Like Tetris but with angry neighbours. Leigh Way, @LA_Way I live on the Isle of S kye so a game like Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture. People have disappeared and you have go figure out what’s happened! Could include some Scottish folklore too. Ryan Booth, Facebook A racing game with boy racers… Kelly, @Penfold1986 South Side of Glasgow would make a great zombie game… Michael Macmanus,…
