He is passionate about passing on his knowledge through student programmes at Dixter and worldwide lectures. T he tour starts with a visit to a private garden brimming with scent and colour, designed by plantaholic designer Alasdair Cameron and his wife Tor. Lunch follows at a local inn before we drive to the enchanting Hotel Endsleigh, where you’ll stay during your trip. The gardens at the hotel are thought to be one of the last commissions by the renowned landscape designer Humphry Repton and you’ll have plenty of time to explore the woodland walks, stunning terraced borders, and shell house, with head gardener Ben Ruscombe-King as your guide. Festive glow As that most wonderful time of the year creeps ever closer, it’s time to wrap up warm, head out to a garden after dark and follow one of the many illuminated walks that are becoming as familiar a feature of the Christmas season as carols and mulled wine. From this month gardens around the UK will open twinkly trails, many with a choreographed music soundtrack. This year several gardens are hosting trails for the first time, including the National Trust’s Kingston Lacy in Dorset, the ‘Capability’ Brown landscaped grounds at Temple Newsam near Leeds and the royal residence in Northern Ireland, Hillsborough Castle and Gardens outside Belfast.
