I like to collect things. As an amateur, mostly, but along with the obvious contenders – such as art, ceramics and books – a few themes have emerged over the years by happenstance. Antique mirrors and swans seem to repeat in various locations around my house. It definitely has a vintage vibe, so I try to even out my predilection for buying retro by adding a few modern pieces into the mix. Getting the balance right takes dedication, which is why George Gaddum’s Tiger House, on page 38, is a masterclass in swoon-worthy collectibles. With an eye for the exotic, he set about transforming an old barn on his family farm in Hawke’s Bay into the epitome of a tastemaker’s dream scene. Think Out of Africa meets Eat Pray Love via…

For RELAXING As the temperature drops, we’re inclined to recline with a good book or good company. Fibre panel heaters are the ideal solution to provide background heat. They’re easily attached to the wall and can be painted to match your colour scheme, so they won’t pull focus from your interiors. The Goldair EcoSave Fibre Panel Heater with Wi-Fi can be controlled from your smartphone via the Goldair app, so you have control over the ambience of your bedroom or living space. Goldair’s EcoSave models use convection and radiant technology to swiftly and silently convert cool air into heat. Combine this with its low power output and you’ll use less electricity as you put your feet up. For the OFFICE Studies have shown that levels of air pollutants can be higher indoors than…

Sarah Meikle isn’t the sort to muck around. Three days after moving back to Wellington – after 10 years in India, London, the Middle East and South America with her Tourism New Zealand marketing job – she bought a house. “I flew in on a Monday, viewed two properties and bought this one on the Thursday,” she says of the 1910 villa high in the hills of Island Bay. Although she first moved to Wellington when she was 10, Sarah had visited the suburb only once or twice before, but she was attracted to the house’s good bones, its sun-splashed garden and its stunning views over Cook Strait. “It’s also sheltered from the northerly winds, and Island Bay is such a lovely, laidback community. It’s a coastal suburb but close to the…

Who lives with you? My flatmate, aka my lockdown wife, Shareen. We made our house into a health camp over lockdown last year, as I had just come out of breast cancer surgery. We’ve since had a couple move into our previous flatmate’s room – Carlos from Columbia and Kim from Canada. Sadly, no pets. I love dogs, but I work too hard and normally travel too much. Instead, I’m one of those crazy ladies who will cross the road to pat a dog, just to get my doggie fix. Tell us about your house. Our home is spacious and we have three bedrooms, three bathrooms and an office, so there is heaps of room to live in your own space or choose to be more social. We are all quite…
