editor’s note

YOU cannot imagine the quiet around me while I write this month’s editorial. And I’m at my desk, in the office. Why is it such a big deal, you want to know? It’s less than 10 days to D/code and there’s not a squeak from the team huddling a few metres away from where I am. You know what this means, don’t you? It’s that inexplicable silence before the storm…when all it will take is a single nervous laugh, or that one email, or that untimely phone call…that one small unsuspecting trigger, for the chaos to erupt. What I’m trying to say here, without actually saying it, is that I miss the chaos, and at this point, I’d rather have the familiar noise than this unnerving silence. Because it is in…

SHAPED TO SHOW Two sheets of metal, either brass or stainless steel, have been cut, curved and welded to create the seamless Mass side table. Designed by Israeli designer Roee Magdassi for Northern, the structured, sleek piece has a sturdy body and a storage and display space at its base. The display space is open on both sides, to let light pass through, and looks like a sculptural base even when it isn’t filled. The crisp shape of Mass has an artistic edge that looks good from every angle, making it easy to use in a cluster and individually. POWER CONTRASTS Early this year, at Maison Gerard’s location at The Elizabeth Collective, designer Carol Egan presented Decade, an exhibition of old and new works that celebrate her signature play of forms - light…

CANADIAN WOOD CREATES INDIA’S FIRST NORTH AMERICAN STYLE WOOD FRAME CONSTRUCTION HOUSE IN MYSORE The city of Mysore now boasts a seamlessly crafted house in India’s first North American style Wood Frame Construction (WFC) by Canadian Wood in association with Pyramid Timber Associates. Both the interior and exterior of the house is a robust mix of five species of wood - Western hemlock, Spruce-pine-fir, Western red cedar, Yellow cedar and Douglas fir - sourced from sustainably managed forests. The wood panels are capable of withstanding strong winds and earthquakes, making them suitable for indoor and outdoor applications. The novel home build is a growing trend across the country for optimising labour, costs and material use. MATERIOLOGY 2.0 MELDS THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE At the Materiology 2.0 exhibition in February this year, material…

ILLUSION LENS BY VINCENT LEROY TOKYO, JAPAN If Roppongi’s high rises weren’t enough, there’s now a new way to look at the crisp Tokyo sky. The Illusion Lens, a spaceship-like glass structure, landed atop the rooftop helipad of the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower, as a way to be closer to the clouds. Far from the bustle of the city down below, the lens creates an area of contemplation around it. The installation acts as a multi-faceted light sensor, a reflective piece mirroring the sky, and a spot to catch a western view of the sunrise. The piece comes alive at night, glinting against the lights but still remaining an illusion due to its smooth surface. It looks at Tokyo differently, through the eyes of the artist.
