All the lost homes – and we still don’t know how many – of the people in southern Queensland and northern NSW (the Northern Rivers, Hunter Valley, Sydney, and all the other pockets under water along our east coast) is heartbreaking. But the human response has been extraordinary. Losing a home with all your possessions in it must be the most confusing, painful experience. next big kin A new fashion and textile design destination has landed in Melbourne’s Collingwood. Located on Peel Street, Kin Fashion is a First Nations Fashion Accelerator Project supported by Kinaway, the Victorian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Chamber of Commerce. Sophie Honess has been drawn to art since she could hold a pencil, but it wasn’t until her sister invited her to a Gomeroi culture weaving workshop in Tamworth that she discovered her true medium. “That was when I met fellow Gamilaroi Yinarr [woman] Amy Hammond, who taught me how to weave. I’ll never forget that morning,” Sophie explains. “I met myself as a weaver and it was like something that had been resting for a long time woke up. Amy taught me our cultural practice of weaving and, as I watched her make a basket stitch by stitch, I listened to her tell our stories.
