editor’s note

Dear Reader, I have a soft spot for handknitted sweaters, especially those that end up in thrift stores. There’s something about these precious garments adrift in a sea of discarded clothing that breaks my heart, so I do what any knitter would—I rescue them. Occasionally, these secondhand sweaters need a little TLC—small holes that need mending, stretched-out shoulders begging to be reblocked—and I gladly help restore them to their former glory. Many of these sweaters find a permanent home in my wardrobe, but sometimes they’re just not the right size or style. In such cases, when I can’t find someone whom it will fit perfectly, I’ve been known to frog the yarn and save it for future projects. Even though the original sweater is no more, the spirit of making lives…

fiber trails of the upper rio grande

The cliffs rose from the high-desert floor in layers of reds, rusts, pinks, and yellows against a backdrop of brilliant-blue skies. Bright-yellow spots of blooming rabbit brush littered the valley. The last stretch of the drive here along the winding and sleepy backroads left me tense. As I stepped out of the car at the Ghost Ranch visitor center, I was surrounded by the faint smell of desert sage and piñon, and I felt myself start to relax. I love the desert. Any desert. It is the place in the world where I feel most at home. Visitors to the area will immediately see why New Mexico lives up to its name, The Land of Enchantment, and why Georgia O’Keeffe sometimes called this spot the “Faraway.” In October 2019, I took…

genealogy shawl

Intricate Shetland-style lace and hardy lace-weight wool combine in a light-as-air shawl that keeps out the chill. The Genealogy Shawl starts with a provisional cast-on, and the center panel and borders are worked in two directions. The decorative edging is joined to the shawl as it is worked, and the ends are grafted together using Kitchener stitch. (For a completely invisible graft for the edging, see the article on page 16 to learn how to graft two-sided lace.)
