setting the scene

Spring is here, and that means that nature returns to life in the Greater Kruger.” Spring is here, and that means that nature returns to life in the Greater Kruger with surprising and exquisite abundance – acacia trees bloom, cuckoos and bee-eaters visit, and impala start to drop their young in increasing numbers. If you’ve been reading KRUGER MAGAZINE from the outset, you’ll be familiar with our Species ID series, which tells you more about your favourite wildlife. In this issue, you’re invited to learn all about the ‘unlikely’ giraffe, an animal so strange that early travellers on the continent hardly knew what to make of it. “The appearance of a troop of those antediluvian figures, gliding majestically amid the wild magnificence of an African landscape, never failed to transport me beyond…

from the publisher’s pen

How amazing is springtime – waiting for the summer rains to start, watching Mother Nature transform herself in beautiful colours, and looking forward to seeing our migrant birds return. There is magic in the air, and talking about magic, have a look at our article on the chameleon on page 140. Now that is the pure magic of Mother Nature herself! The KNP camp we visited this time around was Punda Maria, and what an eye-opener that was, because on this occasion, we looked at the camp with (obviously) different eyes. The old and the new coming together reminds us of winter turning into spring, then returning to winter, showing us that old is not necessarily over the hill, so to speak. As you all know by now, the history article is…

favourite spots

I enjoy picking up a Kruger map, scanning thousands and thousands of photos, revisiting those special memories and looking for that one favourite spot. These are my favourite memories… 1 Gezantfombi Dam Having a Crocodile Bridge koeksister at Gezantfombi Dam, watching a grey heron coming in for a landing and practising BIF shots, when a leopard appears out of nowhere. Needless to say, when you go through the photos, you realise he was there all the time... 2 Lower Sabie Sitting at the Lower Sabie deck at 4am listening to all the early morning sounds and for the first time hearing the call of the western barn owl living in a thatched roof. On another occasion, watching a huge male lion crossing the bridge… 3 Satara Experiencing the most beautiful sunsets at Satara, visiting Sweni Hide, and…

feedback on our third deserving project

“We are privileged to have showcased your great project and are grateful to be able to support in this way! ” We think all will agree that this was a most informative and interesting project – and how blessed we are to be able to contribute to the truly deserving project we featured in Issue 3 of KRUGER MAGAZINE. We believe The Black Rhino Guardian Programme is but one of many trying to ensure that future generations may have the privilege to see black rhinos in the wild! What a sad day it would be if they had to disappear altogether. To Dr Nikki, Catherine and your team – not forgetting all other sponsors of this great project – a huge thank you! With the good news about our donation, we received a thank…

skukuza local bakers

Business success stories are always heart-warming – but none more so than the story of the rise of the Skukuza Local Bakers in THE PARK’s SHOP. Ten young women started the small business in September 2016 when THE PARK’s SHOP was looking at ways to engage more with the local community. However, their lack of skills worked against them. “Only one lady had experience – she came from one of the biggest supermarkets in Hazyview,” recalls Creseldah Ndlovu, Business Manager: “The business didn’t turn a profit for a full six months because our products weren’t selling, and some didn’t come out as well as we had hoped they would.” Discouraged, the young bakers were unsure whether to continue or not. “Fanie van der Walt, FMCG Buyer for THE PARK’s SHOP, had been on…

wild shots outreach

How are we ever going to save Africa’s wildlife if the conservationists of tomorrow have never seen their wildlife, and never experienced or connected with wild animals and wild places? It is dismaying to realise that most young South Africans living on the very borders of Kruger have never had the opportunity to see their wildlife heritage. They just do not have the funds or the transport to access game reserves. Wild Shots Outreach’s aim is to engage these young people in wildlife and conservation through photography. The programme teaches new skills, providing a ‘focus’ and introduction to the natural world and helping to inspire and raise the aspirations of these learners. Wild Shots Outreach is prioritising high-school students from government schools and unemployed youth bordering Kruger. “Wild Shots Outreach’s aim is…
