THE HEART of a Leader

Women are shaping the future of leadership and transforming the workplace. Compared to low representation in the 1970s, women now outnumber men in the workforce and hold 41% of managerial roles. “We’ve seen improvements,” says Caitlin Sockbeson, Assistant Professor of Management at the Davis College of Business at Jacksonville University. But when Sockbeson examines trends in upper levels of management, “it’s not looking quite as rosy.” Women remain vastly underrepresented at the highest corporate levels, to say nothing of the disparities in other industries, like the trades. And the percentage of women of color in executive leadership roles is even lower than that of white women. This isn’t bad news solely for women. It’s bad for all of us. Recent research has indicated that women may hold certain advantages over men in…

The Fight for Women’s Rights

The Fight for Women’s Rights

Suffragists are supporters of women’s voting rights. Women from around the world assembled in Washington, D.C., on March 3, 1913. They were in the U.S. capital to be part of a major event. American suffragists had organized the first national parade to raise awareness for their fight for women’s right to vote. The parade took place on the day before Woodrow Wilson’s inauguration as the new U.S. president. The organizers hoped to gain publicity and support for the cause of universal women’s suffrage. Ida B. Wells-Barnett was there, too. Just months earlier, she had founded her Alpha Suffrage Club. It was the first Black women’s suffrage group. Wells-Barnett intended to march in the parade on behalf of both women and African Americans. However, when southern white suffragists learned that African American women…

The secret tax on women’s time

When studies revealed the so-called pink tax, showing in 2015 that personal hygiene products “for her” cost 13% more than similar products for men, it caused outrage and action. But there is also an unaddressed pink tax on women’s time: a global epidemic of women lacking time to conduct the activities of their everyday lives that men simply do not experience. In fact, men have on average five hours more leisure time per week than women—equivalent to 260 hours, or 10.8 full 24-hour days, each year. Our own research found it’s true everywhere. After a conversation with a mother of three from an upper-middle-class neighborhood of Johannesburg, our colleague Margot Rubin asked, “So you’re saying that there’s nothing outside of money, or time, that will make anything better?” She paused and…

The brilliant women who inspire me

International Women’s Day 8 MARCH This month marks International Women’s Day. On 8 March, under the theme #EmbraceEquity, women all over the world will be celebrated. But, how do we achieve equity in a society where women are still paid less and take on more responsibility in the home? Changes are happening: society has begun to recognise the importance of women in food, and there are lots of brilliant women doing incredible things. Here, we speak to some of them about their experiences in the industry, and what advice they would give to others seeking a career in food. 1 THE AUTHOR Rinku Dutt runs Raastawala (raastawala.com), a Kolkata street-food company, and is the author of Kolkata (£26, Smith Street Books). Which women do you admire in food? My mother, and Garima Arora –…

‘I think women are extraordinary’

′The beauty of animals is that they just see the person, not the status,’ actor Adjoa Andoh muses, describing her Labrador Millie’s indifference to celebrity culture. ‘I remember 12 years ago, going to the gala screening of the film Invictus in Leicester Square, and introducing my kids to Morgan Freeman, Clint Eastwood and Matt Damon on the red carpet. Then we come home and the dog’s been sick in front of the telly, so I end the evening mopping up sick in my posh frock. Animals just don’t care – status, shmatus!’ It’s this dichotomy of starry and simple that makes Andoh, 59, so enthralling. We meet in her favourite cafe in Brixton – the one she’s been coming to for more than 20 years – and I’m struck by how…

“HAVE A CONSTANT DIALOGUE WITH YOURSELF TO SQUASH COMPARISON”

Motherhood came at an unexpected period in my life, when, for the first time since the age of 16, I wasn’t working. I was 48 and unemployed. I’d just left the Today show, my dream job, to pursue other goals and bet on myself. At the same time, I’d connected with an acquaintance who would soon become more than a friend. We took a leap of faith and decided to pursue love and parenthood. Being a parent at this point in my career gives me room to create the show I dreamed of and the environment to be the parent I want to be. I make it a point to show my team the real me: the “workaholic” who will now say I have a hard out to pick up my…

Mujeres QUE MARCAN LA PAUTA EN EL Deporte

Rape and Resistance in Egypt

Rape and Resistance in Egypt

Radius: A Story of Feminist Revolution by Yasmin El-Rifae. Verso, 218 pp., $24.95 In the fall of 2012, almost two years into the Egyptian revolution, there began to be more and more reports of sexual attacks on women at demonstrations in Egypt. Since President Hosni Mubarak’s ouster in February 2011, the country had been undergoing a chaotic, contentious political transition. An interim military government was dedicated to protecting the interests of the old regime, Islamist parties were pursuing political power, and various prorevolution groups were clamoring for real reforms. Large crowds were still gathering regularly, most often in Cairo’s Tahrir Square. In these crowds, women were encircled by groups of men, stripped, beaten, raped, and dragged from one end of the square to the other. Sometimes hundreds of men were involved;…

everybody has a story

Seven years ago, I had my first miscarriage. I already had a daughter, so I was met with comments like, “At least you have a child,” “At least it happened early,” or, “At least you know you can get pregnant.” None of that helped. And the silence from those who chose not to mention it told me that the death of my baby meant nothing to them. I felt like I had to keep it private, which isolated me. My husband and I then had another pregnancy and lost that baby as well. I got really angry after that, because I could see that if one in four pregnancies ends in loss, then I couldn’t be the only person who wanted support. So, I organised little groups with women in Sydney…

A WOMEN'S PLACE IS IN THE BOARDROOM

Successful leaders not only enable their enterprises to thrive, but they also leave a legacy which motivates others. Bertina Engelbrecht, CEO of Clicks Group, provides advice for other future leaders, “first, be authentic. Know yourself, your strengths and the areas you need to develop.” Engelbrecht goes on to include being mindful of others, “encourage and be supportive of other women in leadership positions. Make time to replenish and reinvigorate yourself, to reflect and care for yourself, and invest in relationships. Lastly, practice gratitude and generosity by giving back to others.” Ursula Myles, General Manager at Takeda South Africa, builds on the notion of self-belief and individual virtues, “authenticity plays a significant role. We must be true to ourselves, our values, and our aspirations and take them to the workplace. Be…

‘I was mesmerised by her tales’ Siobhan Wykes, Editor-in-Chief, Hertfordshire My gran (my dad’s mum) was just 60 when she died, so I only had 10 years with her. She lived in Kentish Town, North London, in a house with an outside loo, a collection of glass clowns and lots of red lipsticks and jewellery. She smelt of a perfume called ‘Devon Cockington Violets’, called me ‘child’ and made dresses for a living, teaching me how to sew, a skill that comes in handy to this day. She loved to tell stories and often took my sister and I to the theatre (the cheap seats). I think she inspired a need to tell stories in me and my sister, and I would be mesmerised by her tales. She rode a motorbike in a…

Taking on Trump: the woman who has never lost

Taking on Trump: the woman who has never lost

“The 2024 presidential campaign is under way, Lord help us,” said The Wall Street Journal, and the Republican Party now has a second official candidate: Nikki Haley. The former governor of South Carolina launched her campaign last week, challenging Donald Trump for the GOP nomination. The 51-year-old has “clear strengths”. As a popular two-term governor who served as America’s UN ambassador under Trump, she has plenty of experience. A child of Indian immigrants, she brings racial and gender diversity to the field. She’s also charismatic and good on the stump. What she lacks, however, is an “obvious core of support” or a distinctive platform. Critics dismiss her as a throwback to the pre-Trump GOP. Haley is “relentlessly upbeat”: as governor she mandated that cabinet agencies answer phone calls from the…

The POWER of the SISTERHOOD

The POWER of the SISTERHOOD

The first thing I knew about writers was that you could not trust them in a group. My older sister is a writer. She went to the University of Iowa for playwriting, and by then, as a precocious teen, I knew it was where the supposedly best novelists studied in the fiction program. “Oh, the fiction writers won’t even talk to us,” my sister told me. “They stay by themselves. And the way they find out if they are doing badly is by their mailboxes. If they don’t like your work, they move your space around so everyone knows it and you lose your funding.” Was this true? Had she been joking? It didn’t matter. I knew by then that I, too, desperately wanted to write. It would be embarrassing, I…

On Pointe

We are 11 or 12 years old, but most of us look younger; we have been chosen, in part, because we are small for our age. Our smiles are tense, our necks stretched, our backs erect. Perhaps we are pretending, as we’ve been taught, that a puppeteer is pulling up our heads by a string. We have been told that our ballet school is the best in the world; we have been told that we are lucky. There are 20 of us in the photo, and we all want the same thing: to dance with the New York City Ballet. My cheek is tilted toward the light, but my eyes are pointed down. This year, my body has begun to defy me: The curve of my hip is peeking out from my…

Denis Mukwege, La fuerza de las mujeres. Traducción de Alejandro Pradera. Galaxia Gutenberg, Barcelona, 2022.

‘Women’s Voices Have Power’

History tells it like this: With one click of a powerful newspaper’s “publish” button, movie mogul Harvey Weinstein’s choke hold on Hollywood came undone. But that’s far from the full story. It has been five years since New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor published their bombshell investigation chronicling decades of sexual assault and harassment by Weinstein, igniting the worldwide #MeToo movement originated by activist Tarana Burke. Now the new movie She Said, based on their 2019 book, showcases the gripping detective tale behind the scenes of the investigation, with Carey Mulligan starring as Twohey and Zoe Kazan as Kantor. Initially there “wasn’t a big group” of sources willing to come forward with accusations and evidence about Weinstein, says Kantor. “And yet it turns out that the power of…

AS SHE CELEBRATES ANOTHER WIN MICHELLE YEOH ON BREAKING BOUNDARIES FOR WOMEN AND INSPIRING OTHERS AT THE AGE OF 60

It looks as though 2023 is going to be Michelle Yeoh’s biggest year so far. After turning 60 last August, the actress is leading a group of formidably talented women of a similar age who are riding high both personally and professionally. And Malaysian-born Michelle has real reason to celebrate. This year, she became the first Asian to receive a Best Actress nomination at the Academy Awards for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Her role in the comedy-drama has already won her a host of trophies, including a Golden Globe in January and a London Film Critics’ Circle award last week. Michelle rose to fame in Hong Kong action films before landing a role in 1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies, which catapulted her into high-profile parts in hit movies including Crazy Rich Asians and Crouching…

WOMEN… LIFE… FREEDOM

FOR BOTH EMILY PATERSON AND SHOHREH Bayat, there came a clear moment when they realised they had to speak out. Half the world away from each other and many months apart, they had the same epiphany: ‘If not me, then who?’ Paterson, 45, an American who describes herself as a ‘suburban soccer mom’, was arrested while protesting for abortion rights at the Supreme Court in Washington DC in November, while Bayat, an Iranian chess referee, was in China at a tournament in 2020 when, facing harassment from the Iranian regime from afar, she realised she could no longer keep her hair covered with a hijab. It foreshadowed what was to follow in her home country. ‘It was then I knew I had to take a stand,’ Bayat recalls. ‘I didn’t want…

‘I GAVE THE WORLD’S FIRST COVID-19 VACCINE’ May Parsons, 42, has worked as a nurse within the NHS since 2003, after moving to the UK from the Philippines. In December 2020, she made history when she administered the world’s first COVID-19 vaccine outside of clinical trials. She is currently the Modern Matron for Respiratory at University Hospitals in Coventry. She lives in Warwickshire with her husband and two children. We were all scared when the pandemic hit, in March 2020. But when I trained to be a nurse, I made a commitment to help people, and fear was not going to stop me. Because of my experience in respiratory care, I volunteered to work in the ITU (intensive care unit). For six weeks, I witnessed what can only be described as a clinical…

I should try finishing them.’” Last year Travolta released two pop tracks (“Dizzy” and “No Thank You”), and she’s about to drop her debut EP, The Colors of Love. “Each song is a different viewpoint on love, whether it’s a familial relationship or intimate relationship,” says Travolta. As the aspiring pop star forges forward, she can count on her father,…

The Naked Truth

As protesters took to the streets last summer, decrying the overturn of Roe v. Wade, fashion was, understandably, the last thing on anyone’s mind. However, the attack on bodily agency rippled into the sartorial world a few months later, with spring 2023 collections—from Rick Owens to Prada—featuring sheer, nipple-baring looks that both celebrated and called attention to the female form. Coincidence? History begs to differ. “There’s been a symbiotic relationship between women gaining greater access to the public sphere and the way they dress their bodies,” says Cassidy Zachary, a fashion historian and cohost of the podcast Dressed: The History of Fashion. Think hemlines shrinking at Courrèges in the mid-’60s, as birth control became more widely available and The Feminine Mystique could be found on many a bookshelf. “It’s interesting that…
