anatomy of an athlete: the crusty demon

“THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IS HAVING THE ABILITY AND DISCIPLINE TO LET GO OF FEAR AND PUSH YOUR BODY INTO THE UNKNOWN.” What made you want to get into this sport, Pat? I’m not sure what it was about motorcycles that first inspired me. As far as I can remember it’s just something that I’ve always known I was born to do. I asked my dad for a dirt bike when I was three years old and started riding with his help. Since then, I’ve been on a mission to be the best rider in the world in my chosen discipline – Freestyle Motocross. What’s an aspect of your job that most people would be surprised to know about? Along with being highly-skilled motorcycle riders we are also professional risk takers. Every time I swing…

getting to know… the jaydes

SOMETHING PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT ME IS… JAYDE STELLA (JS): I’m half-Kiwi, half-Australian. Not many people know this. JAYDE HEISER (JH): I’m an Aussie from Sydney’s northern beaches and I’m such a homebody! I love home and just chilling out with my family. THE BEST THING ABOUT THIS MAXIM SHOOT IS… JS: The beautiful location and the best team to work with! One of the funniest shoots I’ve ever done. JH: The horse. As soon as I found out that a horse was a possibility in this shoot I was so excited! Also, the beautiful people who owned Casa La Vina were incredible hosts and shooting with Neil Dixon is always amazing. I LOVED DOING THIS SHOOT WITH THE OTHER JAYDE BECAUSE… JS: She is such a fun and bubbly girl, with a big…

luxury connoisseur

What’s left on the shopping list for the supercar connoisseur with a garage full of the latest? How about the La Voiture Noire, a one-off beauty built to celebrate the 110th anniversary of Bugatti — one that pays tribute to the Bugatti Type 57. Shown off at this year’s Geneva motor show, this French freak has an earth shattering price tag of US$19 million, making it the official king of bling with the largest price tag ever for a new car. But before you get your cheque books out, it’s already been sold to a mystery buyer — rumoured to be footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. Like all modern Bugatti’s, the La Voiture Noire (French for ‘the black car’) is powered by a quad-turbo W-16 8-litre engine with 16 cylinders. Needless to say, the…

It was back in 2017 that Ducati revealed their Panigale V4 model to the people. The bike was essentially a MotoGP prototype for the street, packed with a MotoGP-derived 1103cc V4 engine making 160 kW. For 2020, Ducati have created the Streetfighter V4 — same chassis — same engine, but with a stripped-down aesthetic. Just don’t assume stripped-down is a weakness in its armour, as this is one sinister new prototype. In profile, it looks identical to the Kawasaki Z1000; and because of the minimal fairings that brilliant engine just dominates the aerodynamic profile. Its tail section is similar to the Panigale V4, but with a wider one-piece handlebar more suited to road use than track carnage. The Panigale V4’s 1103cc motor is expected to be carried over to the Streetfighter, but…
