NOTHING VENTURED, NOTHING GAINED Late last year, on an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, I was trying my best to keep limbs and vital organs in tact. TRIBE Run for Love is billed as a tough multi-day running race, but as I careered down a makeshift path hacked into the side of a mountain, it felt more like an expedition into the unknown. You can read all about my struggles on page 28, but for now let me say that when I did eventually stumble over the finish line, initial relief was followed by a genuine sense of achievement – the sort only found when we truly test our limits. But plenty more have missed out – among them, Japan’s national and oldest sport, sumo wrestling. Combining balance, aggression and surprising speed, becoming a grand champion 'yokozuna' – the sport’s highest rank – takes a lifetime of commitment. Competitions last an epic 15 days at the elite level. The fights themselves, however, may only last seconds, as one competitor attempts to push the other out of the ring or make his opponent touch the floor with anything besides his feet. BANG FOR YOUR BUCK Is there a ‘best’ exercise for burning calories? Put simply, no. Dr Josh Bakker-Dyos explains... A calorie is a unit of energy, and energy is the capacity to do work – the more work we do, the more calories are ‘burned’. Simple? Not quite. Excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) or ‘afterburn’ is the concept of elevated metabolism after working out. The body is working hard and using energy to restore itself back to its resting state and making the adjustments necessary for subsequent improved performance. Strength training with heavy loads and short rest intervals, utilising exercises that fire large muscle groups, will produce greater afterburn than, say, a run. Afterburn is influenced by intensity, not duration, of the exercise. There is no ‘magic-bullet’ exercise, but your squats, deadlifts and lunges all…

Combine the following and perform the moves regularly as a warm-up to your gym routine, before a run, or as an active break from desk work. SPRINTS TO SIDE LUNGES Sprint on the spot with light, quick steps for a count of three, then lunge with your left foot to the side and lean over the planted foot as far as you can towards the ground. Your hand and feet should be in line. Return as quickly as possible to sprints for another three-second count before repeating exercise to the right. 360 JUMPS Jump from slightly flexed knees with a straight trunk and try to spin as much of a full completion as possible before landing on soft, flexed knees. SELFIE SATISFIED If you’re looking for a social media platform not tainted by toxicity, Instagram is the way forward according to a new study by the Centre for Urban Studies at the University of Amsterdam. Because Instagram is more focused on visuals than t ext, researchers concluded it was less polarising. In o ther words, it’s harder to have an argument over a picture than a controversial statement. 44 per cent of people with mental health problems do not know their problems could be classed as a disability, according to mental health charity Mind. After surveying 1,700 people online, Mind says this means people are missing out on important workplace rights and protections to which they are entitled.
