hoy and mcguinness to star on british rallycross outings

Six-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy and Isle of Man TT record-holder John McGuinness will both make star guest appearances in the British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy this year in a Citroen C4 Supercar. Track cycling legend Hoy will race in the opening round of the series at Lydden Hill onAugust 30-31. While McGuinness, a man synonymous with motorcycle road racing success at the revered Isle of Man TT, will use the same car to compete at the series’Knockhill round in late September. “I’ve haven’t got a lot of experience on four wheels but wasn’t a million miles off the pace when I tested Gordon Shedden’s British Touring Car Championship car a few years ago,” said McGuinness. “Trying my hand at British rallycross is a good opportunity and I grabbed it…

why the mk2 is a national hero

Motorsport is always about what is coming next, the latest development and shaving off the fractions of a second, be that on the Tarmac or in the forests. It is odd, therefore, that the Ford Escort Mk2 is the competition machine that will never die. Reporter Luke Barry explores the appeal of rallying’s rear-wheel-drive icon this week and discovers that it has a lure for drivers which remains undimmed some 45 years after it first hit the European roads. The key element that makes the Escort such a lynchpin of the national scene is the fun factor for those behind the wheel. When the Ford is going sideways, it provides a grin for the one at the controls and it provides a thrill for the spectating fans. And now, even after all…

verstappen masterminds mercedes’s first 2020 defeat

Grand prix winner Max Verstappen says even he was surprised by the pace he unlocked from his Red Bull-Honda which enabled him to break the Mercedes-Benz stranglehold at the top of the Formula 1 rostrum in the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday. Acute tyre strategy during qualifying on Saturday meant that the Dutch driver was the only leading player who would start the 52-lap race on the harder of the Pirelli rubber. All three compounds that the tyre firm took to the British track last weekend were softer than the versions used in the previous week’s British Grand Prix. That, allied to soaring temperatures, meant that tyre life was critical. Mercedes locked out the front row with Valtteri Bottas pipping Lewis Hamilton to pole position, while Verstappen started fourth behind…

sargeant majors on formula 3 points despite collision

American Logan Sargeant has a slender lead in the Formula 3 points standings after winning the opening race of the two at Silverstone last weekend The Prema driver holds top spot by a single point from team-mate Oscar Piastri despite a collision ruling him out of the second showdown. Sargeant was untroubled from pole position in the Saturday race. He was helped when Briton Jake Hughes scrapped with Liam Lawson for second place. The pair continued to dice throughout and dropped back from the leader. Hughes eventually cemented the place. Ben Barnicoat, who is driving in place of Enaam Ahmed for Carlin, took 10th spot. In the reversed-grid event, Dutch driver Bent Viscaal capitalised on a slow getaway from poleman Barnicoat and then went on to pass Lirim Zendeli for top spot. Barnicoat…

teams angered by racing point “copying” censure

Half of the team on the Formula 1 grid have appealed against a governing body penalty applied to the Racing Point squad for copying parts from last year’s title-winning Mercedes machine. Racing Point was found guilty of copying the brake ducts from the 2019 SilverArrows and was docked 15 constructors’ championship points and fined £360,000. However, an FIA ruling last Friday means that the cars can continue to race unaltered – and legally – for the remainder of the 2020 season. It is permitted that certain parts can be shared across cars, such as gearbox internals, but other parts must be the intellectual properties of the individual teams. Brake ducts are in the latter category, and that is why Racing Point has been sanctioned. Ferrari was one of the most vehement about the…

ilott in command in formula 2 title battle

Briton Callum Ilott has moved to the top of the Formula 2 points table after taking a feature race win at Silverstone last weekend. The Ferrari Junior driver dominated the opening race from pole position and timed his pitstop perfectly to extend his advantage over the chasing pack. The UNI-Virtuosi racer crossed the line ahead of Christian Lundgaard, with fellow Briton JackAitken in third spot. Briton Dan Ticktum was in hot water for a radio message during the race when he almost had a collision with Louis Deletraz, where he was heard to say he would crash into his rival if the situation occurred again. Ticktum eventually finished 15th. The second race was more controversial as Prema Racing duo Mick Schumacher and Robert Shwartzman collided at Brooklands while battling for the lead with just…
