Not in my wildest dreams could I have imagined when I wrote my last editorial on 11 March the tragedy engulfing our world today. On that day, the Director General of Health, Dr Bloomfield, told us that for a fourth consecutive day there were no additional confirmed or probable cases of Covid-19 to report in New Zealand. He also said that there were five confirmed cases and two probable cases of the virus. Like many people, I was still confident that the spread could be contained. I could not have been more wrong. stirling moss

Stirling Moss grew up on an estate on the Thames called ‘Long White Cloud’. It was prophetic given his love of this country, and the success he enjoyed here. I thought he was merely being polite when over dinner in an Italian restaurant, a short walk from his home in Mayfair, he said, “If I didn’t live here, I’d live in New Zealand”. But I’ve since read that same sentiment in his wonderful book, which summarized his racing career. Arguably no other driver made their first trip to these shores with greater fanfare, but in January 1956, his name had already transcended the sport. People without the slightest interest or knowledge of motor racing knew his name. And what a name it was — a brand that lasted his entire life.…

moss, simply the boss

They say you never want to meet your heroes in case they disappoint. Well, I met Stirling Moss several times and he never disappointed, even in the crowded confines of the pits at the 1968 Monaco Grand Prix when he almost tripped over me. He had more important people to see, and that was fine by me. On other less busy occasions Stirling always had time, no matter who you were. As a 13-year-old in Rotorua waiting to take a photo of him on my Box Brownie, the great man was pleased and patient enough to oblige even while his minder wanted to shoo me away. Stephen Beattie’s life changed during a visit to the Sports Car Club of New Zealand’s (SCCNZ) stand at the New Zealand Classic Car Magazine Ellerslie Car Show in February 2017. “A welcoming wave from Walter beckoned me over to look through his massive car album of Beattie sports cars I had built,” said Stephen. “Although some 20 years had passed since the last car was built, and a lot of water under the bridge, deep down an old flame reignited, which I recognized as being my passion for building and designing racing cars. as good as it gets

You could make a case for this being the best Daimler Dart in the country. That wasn’t necessarily the goal when Kevin Lindsell bought the car but the results of his restoration speak for themselves. Just take in the shape of the top roll of the seats. They are full and round and there’s not the slightest hint of a pull or a pucker in the leather. Connolly hide imported from England, naturally, but upholstered here. I mentioned the upholstery to Kevin and he said the quality of the work on the seats had drawn similar comments from others, including other Dart owners and a concours winner. It’s the only surviving, in fact the only ever completed, SP252; the would-be successor to the SP250 Daimler Dart.
