Photographer: Gary Hart Location: Yosemite National Park, CA Equipment: Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Situation: Immortalized by Ansel Adams and visited by thousands of photographers each year, Tunnel View has become one of the world’s most beloved vistas. Approaching Yosemite Valley on CA State Route 41, visitors exiting the monochrome monotony of the Wawona Tunnel are treated to a living-color view of “who’s who” of Yosemite icons. The sudden unfolding of El Capitan, Cloud’s Rest, Half Dome, Sentinel Rock, Sentinel Dome, Cathedral Rocks and Bridalveil Fall make me feel the way Dorothy must have felt when she first opened the door on Oz. While I usually visit Tunnel View several times on each Yosemite trip, I only bring my camera out when I think something special might be possible.…

For those who studied photography in a formal setting as I did in college, the fundamentals of photographic composition are taught in both theory and practice. Dynamically arranging the elements of a scene within the boundaries of the frame comes naturally to some people, but this is a talent that can be learned by anyone. Whether you developed your skill in photography academically or simply through trial-and-error in the field, a review of the core concepts in composition can help you further improve your images. In his three-part series on the topic, “The Art of Seeing”—the first part of which appears in this issue—Marc Muench guides us through the core concepts of composition and his personal approach to landscape photography. “It’s possible that with no formal training, and your camera…

MORNING DOUBLE BOLT By John Dodson An early-morning thunderstorm seen from Mohave Point on Hermit Road in the western section of Grand Canyon National Park. This dramatic storm moved from west to east along the north rim of the canyon while I watched safely on the south rim. These lightning bolts occurred a few seconds apart as they were captured with a lightning trigger on my camera. I composited in a portion of one of the bolts to convey the drama of the moment. It was as if I was watching a storm move across a movie screen from my vantage point, easily one of the most dramatic mornings…

NEW S-LINE LENS FOR Z MOUNT, PLUS FILMMAKER’S KIT Nikon has announced a new S-Line lens for its Z mount mirrorless cameras, as well as a Filmmaker’s Kit featuring the Nikon Z 6. The NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S is the fourth lens to be introduced in the S-Line and the widest option thus far, joining the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S, NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S and NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S. The focal length range of this new zoom is ideal for landscape and travel photography. Nikon was able to design this lens with a front lens element that’s nearly flat, which Nikon states makes it the “world’s first filter-attachable ultra-wide-angle zoom lens covering a focal length from 14mm.” At 1.07 pounds and just 3.5 inches long when retracted, the NIKKOR…
