In my personal pantheon of sailing heroes, no one comes close to Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. On April 22, a month after his 80th birthday, the grizzled Brit celebrated the 50th anniversary of his historic win in the original Sunday Times Golden Globe round-the-world race by sailing his 32ft ketch, Suhaili, across the 1969 finish line off Falmouth, England, accompanied by a flotilla of friends and fans. In case you went to sleep in 1968 and just woke up this month, the Golden Globe was the first nonstop around-the-world race and was, literally, the stuff of legends. The boats were small and the dangers great. Communication was hit-and-miss and navigation was by sextant. Of the nine starters, Knox-Johnston, sailing Suhaili, the teak double-ender he’d had built in India, was the only finisher.…

MORE THAN EYE CANDY SAIL has triumphed in replacing the vapid foredeck-posing representation of “women in sail” with good stories by and about female sailors and unpretentious photography of women sailing. Along with the articles and notes on important seamanship, this tilt of media culture makes me feel more ready to snuggle into the recesses of my bilge (which I had to brighten up with yellow paint) and get the nasty job of wrestling the new fuel tank, hoses and through-hull into place done. On this idyllic California summer morning, Soncy, a classic 40ft Rhodes-designed sloop built in 1957, is on her way to Santa Catalina Island. On board are owner John Clark Jr., his 10-year-old son, Ian, and me. As we motor out of New-port Harbor while raising the sails, two other sailboats come within shouting distance, and their skippers giving us a thumbs-up. “Beautiful!” one of them shouts across the water. John, used to frequent compliments about his boat, waves in return. Well-deserved compliments, I might add. Soncy is impeccably maintained, her classic lines drawn by one of the most renowned yacht designers of that era. SORT THE CHARTS Lying here on the cockpit seat is my iPad, loaded with Navionics charts. It’s a classic example of the benefits of GPS-assisted paper chart navigation and the wonderful electronics that represent the greatest breakthrough in pilotage in all of our lifetimes. However, nothing is free, and like nearly all vector-based charting systems, the presentation isn’t as intuitive as on a paper chart. Plus, no plotter screen is ever big enough to deliver the overview we need in a close-quarters scenario. I’ve therefore found the best answer is to pilot on a good-old paper chart, using the plotter to confirm where exactly I am on it and for occasional blow-up images. The confidence boost is terrific.
