Never mind about the birds, Richard Faulks says he’s never seen so many dogs on a shoot as he did when he spent a day with the picking-up team on the Whitfield estate’s grouse moor in Northumberland, where he accompanied picker-up Jeff Gatt. The motley crew of canines – more than 50 in total – were all eager, alert and impeccably behaved. In addition to the ethical need to gather all the dead grouse and pick the pricked ones, Richard discovered a sound financial reason for the density of dogs: each grouse shot is worth a great deal of money to the estate. In fact, if each of the pickers-up working that day found one lost bird, the costs of the picking-up team would have been covered. Find out more on…

it’s the time of year that we have all been waiting for – the start of the season.

It’s time to dust off our game and wildfowling guns, pull our shooting jackets from the wardrobe and get out there and enjoy the countryside. It’s also the time of year when you discover your shooting socks have a hole in them, your tweeds have been eaten by moths and your gun has stopped working. But don’t worry – this month’s magazine has suggestions for new kit and equipment. If you are looking for a new game gun, then read our gun test on page 96. We are the first publication to review the Rizzini Regal, which is a rather beautiful over-and-under game gun with a round body and beautifully engraved sideplates. And it’s not just guns. On page 91, Tom Sykes details what cartridges to use on the foreshore, while David Frost…

RSPB likened to vampire squid Sir Ian Botham has asked the RSPB why the charity needs 34 press officers and 685 fundraisers. By comparison, the British Red Cross has just 19 press officers and Macmillan Cancer Support 11. The former England cricketer, who runs the You Forgot the Birds (YFTB) campaign, stated: “The RSPB is the giant vampire squid of the conservation world. Over the past 10 years its 685 fundraisers have pulled in more than £1billion of donations. Its aggressive competition with other charities means that its fundraising costs are so high that far too little gets to the birds.” Martin Harper, director of conservation at the RSPB, said: “The RSPB has two charitable objectives: as well as protecting and conserving nature, we are also required to advance the education and engagement…

customer comes first

Why did you start Avalon Guns? I started it in 1983 because there was a lack of shops in the area [Street, Somerset], and those that were there weren’t moving forward or didn’t understand customer service or selection of stock, etc. I went to a shop one night with every penny I had from my wages to buy a thousand cartridges and a moderator for my .22 and, basically, they couldn’t be bothered and didn’t appreciated my business. I was spending what was all the world to me on goods and there was no thank you, it was like he was doing me a favour. So I thought I could do it better. It was a keen interest of mine, I was into rough shooting and clay-pigeon shooting, and that was what…
