Many years ago, a reader at a game fair boasted about shooting rabbits with a sub-12ft/lb air rifle out to 80 yards. At that range the risk of wounding the rabbit was far too high. All that said about him was that his stalking skills were poor. It turned out that it was his range estimation that needed work. I tested this by getting him to point out an object he thought was 80 metres away, I then used a rangefinder to see it was 35 metres away, not 80. The young man was a bit disgruntled. Trying to save his feelings I said:“You are poor at range estimation, but better at stalking than I thought.” Far too often long shots are thought to represent shooting prowess, but as Peter Theobald says…

Robin’s say The salmon scene is changing, and not for the better Robin Scott, Editor-at-large Like many Sporting Gun readers, I love salmon fishing and shooting in equal measure. But if I had to pick and stick to one, which would it be? The thought had never crossed my mind until recently when a pal put the impossible question over lunch in the fishing hut. He had me stumped. “Come on,” he pressed, “make a choice.” I couldn’t. So I tossed the ball back at him by asking which he’d choose if push came to shove – his wife or his mistress? To me it was the same thing. Clean bowled. The banter went back in a flash to fishing flies. Yet I’ve been thinking things over since, very carefully weighed up the pros and cons…

celebrating 40 years of sporting gun

When I was younger and had more time on my hands, I used to keep a shooting diary. It was inspired partially by the Victorian sporting books I read and by a family friend who had been a bomber pilot during the war. He let me see his flying logbook, which recorded each flight with details about weather, the mission, casualties etc. This got me thinking that I could keep a logbook/ diary of my shooting adventures. In it I logged what I shot, where, the weather and the type of gun and ammunition used. I hoped to use this intelligence to help me understand where the quarry hot spots were, what time of day was most productive and if the weather played a part in success. I also imagined sitting…

letter of the month

My husband Jeff, a lifelong shooter of wildfowl and clays, bought your magazine every month. Before reading it, the first thing he would turn to was the Countryside Quiz, trying to win the cartridge bag for our grandson. I use past tense, because he passed away in March. Guns had been his life. He had old guns and new guns. He could repair guns, blue them, take out dints and make screws. And he was honest: when asked if a gun was worth repairing, he would sometimes say “Best thing tha’ can do is cut six inches off barrels, then put it int’ dustbin.” I did not have a shotgun certificate, and to avoid the police taking my husband’s guns for safe-keeping, our local gun dealer Lawrence Jones, of Bamfords Guns, Eccleston,…
