After two weeks of nationwide protests sparked by the May 25 killing of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis, the Writers Guild of America East took an unprecedented step — confronting a powerful law enforcement union. On June 8, the WGA East became the first member of the AFL-CIO to call on it, the largest labor group in the U.S., to disaffiliate from the International Union of Police Associations, the only law enforcement group represented by the federation. In late April, while working at home in Santa Monica amid the pandemic, Solstice Studios’ head of postproduction, Mark W. McCoy, received a call from CEO Mark Gill with a request: He wanted to move the studio’s debut feature, the Russell Crowe-starring road rage thriller Unhinged, from its Sept. 4 domestic release date to early July. “We had to do things differently,” McCoy explains, adding that he put the project on a “very accelerated and compressed” schedule. In the week of June 1, a little less than 20 percent of the population was watching TV at any given time during the day, Nielsen finds. That’s the lowest mark in three months. Overall TV use has been trending down across the board since late March. There are bright spots — streaming usage is way above its year-ago levels — but the spike in viewing levels amid the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic has almost entirely gone away. tv’s ad market: ‘less bad than feared’

Top entertainment executives are signaling cautious optimism about one segment of their business: TV advertising. ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish, Discovery CEO David Zaslav and Fox Corp. COO John Nallen all suggested at the virtual Credit Suisse conference June 16 that the TV ad market had bottomed out in April. Zaslav said Discovery’s April ad revenue fell 18 percent from the same period last year, instead of the 20 percent predicted earlier in the pandemic, with May and June still trending down but “significantly better” than April. Throughout the week of June 15, Hollywood waited anxiously for the country’s largest movie theater chains to unveil their elaborate reopening plans with one aim in mind: convincing consumers that it’s safe to return to the cinema even amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.
