The text we now assume to be one of the literary masterpieces of Arabic civilisation began life in…

Francis Alÿs – Belgium-born, Mexico-based – is something of a global artist. His work, like the painting above, explores geo- and sociopolitical ideas, conflict and what it means to be a citizen of the world. He’s known for his boundary-blurring interdisciplinary approach (much of his output draws on his training as an architect), with public performance, re-enactments and installations all playing a part in his oeuvre, and his profound, poetic pieces have appeared everywhere from Copenhagen to Turin, Lima to London. This internationalism makes him a natural choice to be a star of this summer’s LIVERPOOL BIENNIAL, alongside others including Annie Pootoogook, Paulina Olowska and Kevin Beasley. In fact, all the artists taking part in the tenth edition, which runs 14 JULY-28 OCTOBER, have something in common: an outward-looking stance…
