DEGAS AT THE OPERA (by Henri Loyrette; Thames & Hudson, rrp £45) It was at the Opéra – that ‘realm of gauze and painted canvas’ in the words of Théophile Gautier – that Edgar Degas found a room of his own. Between 21 February 1885 and 19 September 1892, Degas attended evenings at the Palais Garnier 177 times, though rarely in order to enjoy an uninterrupted performance. Like all regulars he would arrive late, passing through the hallowed porte de communication, the connecting door leading backstage from the main house, in order to converse with friends in the dance foyer. Over the years Degas explored the Opéra’s orchestra, stage, boxes, corridors and dance studios; he also observed the musicians and singers, the spectators, the black-clad subscribers and, of course, the ballet…

Rebecca Aird and Peter Thwaites’s Cotswold studio isn’t a million miles – fewer than 30, in fact – from Kelmscott, that old stomping-ground of William Morris and his circle. The proximity couldn’t be more apt, albeit accidental. As RAPTURE AND WRIGHT, the couple create exquisite fabrics and wallpapers (WoI Oct 2019) that are perfectly in tune with the back-to-nature ethos of the Arts and Crafts. ‘Here, in every paper or fabric we make, you can see the hand of the maker,’ Peter says.
