2015 AMERICAN GOTHIC Since the mid-’90s, Rick Owens has designed darkly elegant clothes for those who, as T&C noted in a 2015 feature, “telegraph their status in code.” His trademark pieces—such as distressed cashmere T-shirts and washed leather jackets, all disheveled in drape and dear in price—inspire loyalty from an unlikely mix of fans. Diane Keaton and A$AP Rocky wear Owens, as does Jack Dorsey, the silent-retreat-and-fastingloving Twitter CEO. This year Owens, who won the 2019 CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year award, is celebrating his label’s 25th anniversary. “I’m as surprised as you are that I made it this far,” he says.…

here’s what i want

As I was leaving the Stella McCartney show in Paris, I ran into Saks president Marc Metrick (see my story on Saks’s jewelry revolution on page 85). We asked each other the customary Fashion Week questions: “When did you arrive?” “Where are you staying?” “What did you like?” I rattled off some favorites before I gave him my conclusion: One of the best things about the fall 2019 collections was that they made me really want to shop. I wanted the Celine capes and boots, the Hermès cashmere, the black Balenciaga blazer, the Givenchy florals, the Loewe pearl shirt. You will spot several of the objects of my desire in this issue, and, luckily for all of us, we have the T&C fashion team out there, always on the lookout…

JESSICA IREDALE The fall of Ralph Rucci—who lost control of his own brand in 2014—captivated the fashion world almost as much as his clothes have. In “FRIENDS WITH MONEY” (page 122) Iredale, a former fashion critic at WWD, considers Rucci’s legacy ahead of his return to Paris couture. “His work was well respected, but I sense he thinks he never fully got his due.” BEN WIDDICOMBE “Is it comforting or alarming that the world’s most powerful families are as messed up as any?” asks Widdicombe, a veteran gossip and entertainment reporter who chronicles the latest in familial dysfunction in “THE DYNASTIC SHRINK IS IN” (page 68). “It seems that so many billionaires are just one squabble away from becoming the Simpsons.” WENDY GOODMAN Though she has written about some of the world’s most interesting dwellings,…

death be not posted

It seems like many celebrity deaths ago. Yet the fumes still linger from the social media conflagration that followed the demise in one bad week in February of Karl Lagerfeld, Lee Radziwill, and Marella Agnelli. Those who knew them, and those who didn’t, grabbed their phones to broadcast conspicuous displays of grief. The model Helena Christensen’s lengthy Lagerfeld screed of sorrow on Instagram included references to fun shoots at his mansion in the south of France and a UFO she thought might have taken him away to a better world. “Of course I posted,” she told me at a dinner months later. “We were close.” Of course. In a more discreet era, mourning was observed with close ones in private. In the age of oversharing, even grieving has gone viral, and social media…
