OVER THE COURSE of the past year, for work and for pleasure, I checked in to 18 wildly different hotels. Some were new to me, such as the Four Seasons Hotel at the Surf Club (fourseasons.com; doubles from $1,250) in Surfside, just north of Miami Beach, where I found myself wanting to teleport every piece of furniture from the Joseph Dirand–designed guest rooms home to Manhattan.
