ed’s letter

I love the questions I get from readers. From show enquiries, to the more in-depth TV questions. One I get asked often is why we don’t publish a stand-alone Blockbuster booklet. Followed by the compliment that our Blockbusters are some of the nicest to complete. I admit I may be biased, but I agree: I simply love our crossword pages and I always have a half-completed Sudoku on my desk. While this issue isn’t quite a full crossword edition, we have three times the normal amount of puzzles and Blockbusters. It kept me busy for quite some time and I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. PS: news articles at the end of 2019 listed streaming as one of the most disruptive influences in the way we…

on with the show!

As we head into the new decade, the idea of catching up on TV series is daunting. There has been so much brilliant TV and there are so many new shows coming. We know we could (and feel like we should) catch up on fantasy series Game Of Thrones (2011-2019) or check out the awards show season favourites, like revolting rich drama Succession (2019-now), murder and infidelity extravaganza Big Little Lies (2017-now), nuclear meltdown masterpiece Chernobyl (2019) and hitman dramedy Barry (2018-now) – all of which are on Showmax. But the real trick is to find exactly what you want, relax and watch just those shows. With that in mind, we’ve highlighted five shows that we’ve either adored in 2019 or have booked for viewing in January. WHAT WE DO IN…

no laughing matter

Jim Carrey is best known for his slapstick humour, over-the-top facial expressions and ability to find a joke in any situation. But when you watch his dark comedy series Kidding (2018-now, stream it on Showmax), you’re getting a very different Jim. His character Jeff Piccirillo entertains kids by day as Jeff Pickles on his long-running puppet show Mr Pickles’ Puppet Time. But when the cameras stop rolling, Jeff shrinks back into a very dark, very deep hole of depression. And it’s something Jim is all too familiar with, saying of his private life, “At this point, I don’t have depression. I had it for years, but when the rain comes, it rains but it doesn’t stay. It doesn’t stay long enough to immerse me and drown me anymore.” DRAGGED DOWN There is…

nqobile ndlovu

Khanyo Bhengu (Nqobile Ndlovu) is getting her happily ever after onscreen right now in Imbewu (2018-now, see more on p12). The pastor has had her traditional wedding and we’re about to see her celebrate her white wedding quietly with family as she marries at her grandmother MaNdlovu’s (Thembi Mtshali) hospital bedside. The 26-year-old Nqobile has come a long way since her first role in 2015 as one of the Kingdom Community Church choir members in Uzalo (2015-now). In a way though, she has always been acting. What was the first show you acted out with friends? I don’t know any young girl who grew up in a Christian family who hasn’t acted in the story of Jesus. I always used to be Mary. Who was your first TV crush? I admired Sibusiso…
