the view from veranda

To kick off this new year—Veranda’s 30th!—we’re celebrating the beauty and magic of white interiors. At first glance, when you walk into an all-white room, everything seems pretty straightforward, right? More often than not, the magic and mystery of a white space is only evident after you’ve spent some time in the room. Subtle details slowly reveal themselves the longer you’re there. Maybe it’s a rich mohair throw on a sofa or a nubby grass cloth on the walls—quiet nuances that express a depth and character you might have initially overlooked. All of the homes in this issue incorporate shades of ivory and other pale hues with aplomb: They’re about creating a feeling. It’s that you-can’t-put-your-finger-on-it quality that envelops you as soon as you cross the threshold. For some, white rooms are transportive;…

CALIFORNIA CLOSETS PARTNERSHIP when interior designer Susan Ferrier began plotting out a new closet for the master bedroom of her Atlanta home, she took her cues from the one thing in the space that could not be changed: her wooden blinds. A stickler for the tiniest of details, she has the same window treatments on all of the frontfacing windows of her house, so that the home’s historic Tudor facade isn’t marred by any inconsistencies. Ferrier, a partner at the design and architecture firm McAlpine, had renovated the 1920s home several years ago (as seen in Veranda, March–April 2015), although she stopped short of the master closet. The space had previously been a guest bedroom that she requisitioned to form part of the master suite—but in its unfinished state, she kept clothes on…

GREAT WHITE WAY The latest watches to hit the jeweler’s vitrine come in crisp shades of ivory, with bands and faces in all manner of materials, from supple leather to luminous mother-ofpearl— all the better to highlight a judicious, delicious splash of sparkling gems. Glitter never had it so good. TAILORED TO A T The power of a well-cut white shirt is undeniable—it’s been adopted by a long line of style makers, from Katharine Hepburn to Grace Kelly. With the kind of ease that pairs as happily with jeans as a ball skirt, it’s a wardrobe staple worth its weight in gold. PORTRAIT: EVERETT COLLECTION; ESCADA SHIRT: EMILY KATE ROEMER/STUDIO D…
