Sense memory is powerful. My sense memories are often tied to the water. I live near several canals and a few miles from the ocean. In the early morning, I open the sliding doors to my yard and can smell the salt. The Riva 90 Argo has landed in South Florida. The 93-footer arrived in Miami as Yachting was going to press. The Argo’s design comes from a collaboration between Officina Italiana Design, the Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee led by engineer Piero Ferrari, and Ferretti Group’s Engineering Department. The yacht has four staterooms plus two crew cabins and five heads. Powered by twin 1,948 hp MTU M96L diesels, she’s expected to have a 22-knot cruise speed and 26-knot top speed. CHULHUN PARK WAS THINKING about deconstructivism. It’s the postmodern architectural movement that emerged in the 1980s, when buildings started looking fragmented and asymmetrical, almost like disjointed pieces stacked together. Having studied industrial and vehicle design in South Korea and the United Kingdom, and having spent four years working on exterior design at Palmer Johnson Yachts in Monaco before taking his current job as chief designer for Latitude Yachts in Latvia, Park thought it might be possible to apply the concept of deconstructivism to the design of a large yacht. ¶ In fact, the more he thought about it, he realized it might be possible to “deconstruct” the exterior design on a hull that would dwarf the world’s largest yacht, the 590-foot Lürssen Azzam. ¶ “When I decided to be a…

PHILIPPE BRIAND IS AMONG THE WORLD’S most celebrated yacht designers, known for his work with Perini Navi, Turquoise, Admiral and more. He pushes the bounds of innovation, most recently last year, when he unveiled a Flyacht concept for two-person sailing, based on the AC75 class of America’s Cup foiling designs. His latest motoryacht to launch is the 190-foot Feadship Najiba — the second-largest aluminum yacht in the Dutch yard’s history, reportedly capable of cruising at 12 knots while burning just 3 gallons of fuel per nautical mile. I’VE HAD THE PLEASURE of testing Riviera’s 68 and 72 Sports Motor Yachts in the past, and I found both vessels to be fine examples of what Riviera does best: mix interior luxury with fun outdoor spaces and confidence-inducing hulls. Thus, I was looking forward to taking the 39 Sports Motor Yacht for a spin — though I wondered if Riviera would be able to replicate the aplomb I saw in the larger yachts, this time in a significantly smaller package. ¶ I stepped aboard the 39 last summer in Sydney, Australia.
