Sometimes, photorealism just doesn’t cut it and a more whimsical approach is what you need to get your message across. Starting with our cover art, we show you how to create these kinds of images, first by sculpting in ZBrush, and then in Blender where Diana David shares techniques for modelling and rendering. We also take a look at a very special collaborative project, where 3D World alumni Adam Dewhirst and gang work on an awesome ‘exquisite corpse’ creation, using a tag-team approach. I WANTED TO APPROACH CREATING THESE PUPPETS HOW AN ARTISANAL WAYANG MAKER WOULD ARTIST Kasita Wonowidjojo SOFTWARE ZBrush, Maya, Mari, XGen, V-Ray, Wrap, Marvelous Designer, Nuke Recent Gnomon School of Visual Effects graduate, Kasita Wonowidjojo, created this piece for a look development class taught by Miguel Ortega. The image, which takes its name from a Javanese term meaning shadow puppeteer, took Wonowidjojo ten weeks to complete. “The puppets were the most interesting piece workflow wise,” she tells 3D World. “I got my hands on two of these puppets and disassembled them for reference. I wanted to approach creating these how an artisanal Wayang maker would.” The traditional process would have involved cutting a huge piece of water buffalo hide as a base, which Wonowidjojo replicated by modelling the puppet’s silhouette in Maya and adding wear in…

ARTIST Mariano Merchante SOFTWARE Maya, Redshift, Houdini, ZBrush, Photoshop Mariano Merchante is a software engineer with a particular focus on real-time graphics technology. He’s been embracing 3D art techniques from a young age and has built a career on learning the artistic and technical principles of computer graphics. “Most of my professional work is graphics and game development related,” he adds, “I keep the purely artistic 3D aspect for my side projects.” One such project is this stunning reconstruction of the old neoclassical building that used to be New York’s Police Headquarters. “The building was manually modelled, with some instancing of elements along curves with a native Maya plugin I wrote,” Merchante explains. “All the materials are procedurally set up on the shader network, so there are no UVs or textures. ARTIST Andres Rios SOFTWARE ZBrush, Marvelous Designer, KeyShot, Photoshop Andres Rios is a freelance concept artist, currently working in the video game industry on projects like the online action RPG Path Of Exile. “I haven’t got much experience, my professional career basically started this year,” Rios tells 3D World. This intricately detailed character belies Rios’ limited experience and took him just 16 hours to complete. “Most of my personal pieces come from a thought,” he explains, “I see an interesting concept in my head and I either sketch it out on paper or write key words to remember the important aspects of it.” If the idea is fully formed in his head then Rios begins sculpting in ZBrush, if he feels it isn’t interesting enough yet he’ll mix various references with the initial idea until…

ARTIST Roman Zhuravlyov SOFTWARE 3ds Max, Fusion 360, KeyShot, Photoshop This intricate vehicle took hard-surface concept designer Roman Zhuravlyov just two weeks to complete. He didn’t employ any unusual techniques, simply blocking out the vehicle in 3ds Max, where he could experiment with the outcome. As an artist and concept designer, Zhuravlyov is fond of using a sketchpad alongside 3D software. “Depending on the task, I think about where I can make an initial sketch in 3D, or if it will be a pencil sketch,” he explains. “First, I make a 3D dummy that I can print out on paper and throw details on it with a pen or pencil, or I do it in Photoshop.” When it comes to references, Zhuravlyov says that anything and everything can be used, but emphasises the importance of…

ARTISTS Leandro Sakami SOFTWARE ZBrush, Maya, Substance Painter, Photoshop, XGen, Arnold 3D character artist Leandro Sakami works at a 3D and 2D project creation studio, located in São Paulo, doing freelance work on the side. This personal project, based on a concept by creative art director and character designer Luigi Lucarelli, took him just two weeks to complete. “I try to make the process as natural as possible,” Sakami tells 3D World. “I simply choose the sphere, and I go about modelling without thinking of the details, just to get a good shape and silhouette.
