The Mummy Soldier Nick Morton plunders ancient sites for timeless artifacts to sell but when he and his partner come under attack in the Middle East, he accidentally unearths Ahmanet, a betrayed princess from Ancient Egypt who has been entombed for thousands of years. As her powers evolve, Morton must stop the resurrected mummy as she embarks on a furious rampage across London. FIVE FACTS: 1. The movie’s original plot was set in Iraq and followed a Navy SEAL and his team that fight mummies led by Ashurbanipal. 2. This movie was released 85 years after the original The Mummy in 1932. 3. The Mummy’s design and gender were altered due to Apocalypse’s look during the post-credit scene in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). 4. The movie is intended to be the first installment in…

california seeks to boost electric-car rebate program

California would spend up to $3 billion under a bill to widely expand its fledgling consumer rebate program for zero-emission vehicles. The state has already spent nearly $450 million in subsidies, but the Los Angeles Times reported (http://lat.ms/2xC52Ij) that so far, the rebates haven’t boosted sales much. In 2016, of the just over 2 million cars sold in the state, only 75,000 were pure-electric and plug-in hybrid cars. To date, out of 26 million cars and light trucks registered in California, just 315,000 are electric or plug-in hybrids. Now the Legislature is pushing forward a bill that would lift rebates from $2,500 to $10,000 or more for a compact electric car. That could, for example, make a Chevrolet Bolt EV electric car cost the same as a gasoline-driven Honda Civic. Already approved by…

learning software in classrooms earns praise, causes debate

In middle school, Junior Alvarado often struggled with multiplication and earned poor grades in math, so when he started his freshman year at Washington Leadership Academy, a charter high school in the nation’s capital, he fretted that he would lag behind. But his teachers used technology to identify his weak spots, customize a learning plan just for him and coach him through it. This past week, as Alvarado started sophomore geometry, he was more confident in his skills. “For me personalized learning is having classes set at your level,” Alvarado, 15, said in between lessons. “They explain the problem step by step, it wouldn’t be as fast, it will be at your pace.” As schools struggle to raise high school graduation rates and close the persistent achievement gap for minority and low-income students,…

box office top 20: ‘hitman’s bodyguard’ stays on top

The Samuel Jackson-Ryan Reynolds action-comedy “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” topped the North American box office for the second straight weekend, but overall business was extremely soft thanks to modest new offerings and the competition of the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor match. Lionsgate’s “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” grossed $10.3 million in its second weekend according to final box-office figures Monday. It was followed by another holdover, the horror spinoff “Annabelle: Creation.”That Warner Bros. release earned $7.7 million in its third weekend. But the main story was the continuing summer swoon for Hollywood. The summer as a whole is running 14 percent behind last year, according to comScore. An August especially light on new wide releases has been part of the problem. The month is 35 percent off the pace of last August. The top 20 movies at…

private companies drive ‘new space race’ at nasa center

For the first time since the retirement of the space shuttle in 2011, NASA says it may soon have the capability to send astronauts to the International Space Station from U.S. soil. Critical milestones are on the horizon for Boeing and SpaceX, the space agency’s commercial crew partners: Flight tests of their spacecraft, including crewed missions, are planned for 2018. That’s launched something of a “new space race” at the Kennedy Space Center, officials said. “We have invested a lot as a center, as a nation into Kennedy Space Center to ready us for that next 50 years of spaceflight and beyond,” said Tom Engler, the center’s director of planning and development. “You see the dividends of that now, these commercial companies buying into what we’re doing.” The public-private partnership is transforming Kennedy…
