hitchin’ rack

Dear Pedro, I’ve been reading this ever since I was a Tiger. What a crazy amount of time! In those 10 years, have you ever wondered what it would be like to transform into a human for a day? Josiah S., Bellevue, Nebraska Hmm, human for a day? Would I sit in The Boss’ quarters and quaintly quaff coffee? Would I pound out perfectly professional prose like the Boys’ Life writers? Would I create captivating collages to display their work? The passel of possibilities is perpetual! HI, PEDRO, I really like how you make every issue new and exciting. I can relate to most of it, and it helps me through most of my Scouting life. Boys’ Life has given me a whole new perspective on Scouting. Nehal H., from the internet And I,…

“she sells seashells…”

Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) had volunteers repeat two-word lists and sentences to compare the errors they triggered. Repeating “top cop” often caused errors where two sounds seemed to arrive at the same time (“tkop”), whereas sentences — like “the top cop saw a cop top” — were more likely to cause a delay between sounds (“tah-kop”). Researchers then created a phrase no volunteer could say 10 times fast without getting tongue tied: “Pad kid poured curd pulled cod.” (Try it!) To investigate further, they put tiny electric devices on people’s tongues to measure articulation. They found that word pairs where the ends of the words differed (“top tock”) caused more errors than those where the start of words were different (“top cop”). The researchers hope future studies will…

mascot mania

JAXSON DE VILLE TEAM: JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS, NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE American Indian artifacts suggest that jaguars once roamed Florida. These days, the only jaguars found in the Sunshine State play football. Jaxson, the team’s mascot, was the first NFL mascot to travel overseas to visit U.S. troops.
