as summer evenings become autumn nights…

it’s a pleasure to bring you an issue filled to the rafters with fashion fantasy, dazzling culture, intriguing faces and beautiful writing. Fittingly – as temperatures cool and leaves begin to turn – there’s a pleasing theme of “home” at play. From model Hailey Bieber’s trip back to her childhood stomping ground in upstate New York (page 192), to our first look inside Claudia Schiffer and her husband Matthew Vaughn’s country hideaway (page 254), the lure of those places we find most peaceful is strong. Yet, whether it concerns our fashion choices or personal identity, our relationship with geography is not always straightforward, is it? In A Tale of Two Wardrobes (page 236), Zadie Smith, one of my favourite authors, writes about the sartorial split she experiences as a Londoner who…

meet & greet

Growing up in America, Binx Walton grappled with her mixed-race identity from a young age. As a result, the model truly felt the impact of her first trip to West Africa – with photographer Juergen Teller for Bring It On Home (page 216). “It’s good to place yourself in a situation where you truly do understand what had to happen to create you,” she says of the experience. Ahead of his major exhibition at the V&A, fashion photographer Tim Walker tells contributing editor Robin Muir how objects at the museum inspired his newest images (Dream Catcher, page 204). “I was trying to find those rare moments when you’re completely illuminated,” Walker says of his time spent immersed in the collections. “You are almost stepping outside yourself.” On page 137, Salman Rushdie tells…

ghana

It was only a matter of time before Accra, with its self-starting fashion scene and enviable coastal position, attracted the eye of Vogue’s fashion team – who captured the gorgeous colours and urban romance of the Ghanaian capital for this month’s epic 20-page fashion shoot. After long days spent in the warm bustle of the city, the group – including photographer Juergen Teller, model Binx Walton (right) and senior contributing fashion editor Poppy Kain – passed their nights at the glamorous Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, Accra’s singular five-star hotel. As well as floating in its cerulean infinity pool and de-stressing at the Resense Spa and hammam, the team unwound at the stylish bar, which, come nightfall, hosts live music beneath its scalloped chandeliers. Meanwhile, the hotel’s renowned Gallery 1957…

CAPES The opera cape – with its ever-so-slightly prissy, structured shape – is on hiatus. Look now to blanket styles that boast sling-it-on appeal. “Consider great lengths: an ankle-skimming overcoat looks sophisticated with autumn’s sturdy boots”Julia Harvey, fashion features assistant BELTED There’s a pacy purpose to autumn’s she-means-business coats: cinched at the waist, they look elegant with a flash of leg. minimal effort

How will you take your minimalism this season? Long, with a double shot and a swirl of caramel? Dark-roasted, with a serving of cream? Or black and without any sugar? Pared-back style is once again on the agenda for autumn, but there is a caveat: thanks to myriad nutty tones and luxurious textures, it’s as warming as a steaming cup of coffee. Key takeaways? Make layering your forte. Sweaters slung around waists and shoulders lend a pleasing slouch to suiting. Meanwhile, added-value necklines, with neat little folds or crisp funnel collars, keep things feeling modern. Jewellery is best kept to a minimum. Delicate hoops are all you need – and you’re good to go.…
