There are many ways to enjoy our hobby. Some people collect trains, and some operate them. Many Classic Toy Trains readers are loyal to O gauge, and others are equally dedicated to S gauge or even Standard. And that’s just scratching the surface! If you run your trains, do you have a large layout or one that is more compact? Do you favor realistic scenery, something more basic, or no scenery at all? Describing the average CTT readers is surprisingly complex because we are so very diverse. The hobby comes into sharp focus only when regarded as the sum of its many parts. lionel repairs and old-school layout magic

FROM OUR READERS KEEP THE BELL! Stan Trzoniec’s “New Life for Old Engines” in the October issue of Classic Toy Trains is a good article and a good subject. But I would have preferred a similar article on repairing reverse units in older postwar engines, perhaps an F3. (The Lionel no. 18503 engine Stan used is from the late 1980s.) Also, Stan writes, “I found that circuit board fit neatly into the small opening formerly used by the locomotive’s bell ringing mechanism.” This is an important NW2 feature. YOUR PICTURES THOMAS OLSEN’S STANDARD GAUGE LAYOUT An unusual winter storm blew into Birmingham, Ala., where Thomas Olsen makes his home, covering the surrounding hills and fields with a blanket of fluffy snow. Or so you would imagine after gazing at the photograph he shot of a small town inspired by his memories. “fifteen” revisiting predictions from 2002

How close were our predictions? Whoa! Time’s up! The topics we covered seemed to fall into three categories: growing the hobby by bringing interest to the youth and families, trends in investment and collector value, and technology. Clarke Dunham (professional layout builder), Jim Bunte (journalist and marketing specialist), Angela Trotta Thomas (toy train artist), Russ Larson (journalist), Nick Ladd (vice-president of K-Line), and Charles Ro (retailer and manufacturer of toy trains) all expressed the need to attract new people to the hobby. Fifteen years later and I think, despite our fears for the future, we actually have succeeded in providing a long-lasting interest in this hobby. The larger the train show, the more families I see. get your trains ready!

Thoughts naturally turn to that old toy train in the attic at this time of the year. Maybe you’ll unpack it and run it around the Christmas tree, just as you did in the dear old days. But if you try to go directly from the storage box to the track, you may be in for a surprise, particularly if the train has been out of service for a while. Your train probably needs a little nurturing, not to mention cleaning and lubricating, before it will perform as expected.
