editor’s letter

Age. It’s something I haven’t talked about much. I have friends who are 25 and also those who are 75. I don’t hold staff back because they are too young, or for that matter, because they are too old. I love youthful enthusiasm as much as the wisdom garnered over a lifetime of experience, relationships and adventures. My family never talked down to me as a child, nor did we ever disrespect seniority. Yet, for some reason, age became ‘a thing’ to me. For the past five years, I’ve hardly disclosed my own, laughing it off around the office because obviously I’m not a day older than 28. For the most part, I rarely feel more than that (although I did disclose to my deputy recently that “I am tired in 2016!”).…

WINNER! Firstly, kudos to all those involved in creating such a wonderful, inspiring and well-written magazine. It is not easy these days to find something that speaks directly to you and aligns with your core values, beliefs and direction. The article that really struck a chord with me was the ‘Paper Delights’ article on creative Rachel Urquhart. I love that Rachel was able to embrace the change that was presented to her especially at such a young age. I feel as though I am on a similar journey to Rachel – in 2015, I overcommitted to a range of unimportant events, functions and commitments and as a result constantly burnt the candle at both ends. My first job after graduation was one that was sucking the mere life force out of…

you’ve written a book… now what?

Once you’ve written that book you’ve had bubbling inside you since forever, it’s time to get some eyes on it. We spoke to Philippa Donovan, who has worked with more than 300 authors and recommends to a stable of 50 literary agents in the UK, US and Australia through her consultancy Smart Quill Editorial. CHECK THE FLOW Is The End really the end? Knowing the right moment to step away from your manuscript is key. It might not be perfect, and it might need further rounds of revision. An excellent way to sense whether you have done all you can with your story is to read the first and last chapters aloud. Is there a sense of connection between the two? Can you feel the transition from beginning to end? If so,…

when you hate being ceo…

WHEN I STARTED TOMS I HAD NO EXPERIENCE AT ALL. No developmental experience, no public health experience. POVERTY ALLEVIATION IS COMPLEX and it requires what I would call a very unique cocktail and a little bit of luck. The cocktail has everything from basic aid – clean water, shelter, shoes on your feet and food in your belly – to making sure the right centre program exists for girls to go to school, to finding ways to break the unemployment by creating jobs for people. It really is a very complex thing that I think sometimes gets over-simplified. What I’ve learned is everyone has to do the part that they can do best and no one can do everything. I’M AN ENTREPRENEUR AND I LIKE TO MAKE FAST DECISIONS with small groups…
