designing a calmer future

Intended to embody the common cultural values of Japanese and Danish design, the ‘Jari’ collection by OEO Studio for Brdr Krüger is about craft and a connection to nature. Named after the Japanese word for pebble, the range includes a chair, with a rounded backrest that mimics the feel of a stone smoothed by water, and a table that gently thickens in the middle, aiming to draw diners inwards. ‘Our lives are becoming increasingly complex,’ notes Brdr Krüger’s creative director Jonas Krüger. ‘I want “Jari” to celebrate the power of slowing down.’ Chair, from £1,788; table, from £3,140 (brdr-kruger.com).TEA TIMEAs we celebrate the centenary of the Bauhaus this year with retrospectives and reissues, Rosenthal is driving the movement into the future through its collaboration with British designer Bethan Laura Wood.…

SELLY RABY KANESenegalese fashion designer and artist Kane founded her eponymous label in 2012, and is known for her uninhibited, eclectic style. Her basket for Ikea (from £10) is based on the art of hair braiding, woven in polypropylene and steel. ‘Transforming this ritual into an object will preserve it – bringing braiding into a global dialogue is a way to connect the rest of the world to transafrican customs,’ she says.STUDIO PROPOLISArchitects Bethan Rayner and Naeem Biviji’s Nairobi-based Studio Propolis specialises in designing bespoke furniture as well as buildings. For Ikea, they created cook- and tableware (bowl, from £3.95), as well as modular indoor/outdoor furniture (stool, £45), focusing on natural materials such as eucalyptus and cork. ‘Our inspiration came from Kenyan life,’ they say, ‘people getting together to chat,…
