JONES Carver’s Law Meme Records CDMM20 This is probably the most soul-baring and intense album yet from Miracle Mile frontman Trevor Jones – his tenth, In Cassidy’s Care, appeared in 2012. The first impression is that the piano of Jones’ long-time collaborator Marcus Cliffe is at the core of these songs but, as the tracks unfold, it becomes clear that Jones himself is the centre, with songs that dig deep into his psyche, delivered in a lovely voice that has improved with age. Cliffe’s arrangements are immaculately simple, BJ Cole’s steel guitar fits perfectly and Gustav Ljunggren’s horn parts are gorgeous. Lyrically, Jones never gives much away, preferring to imply rather than clearly state, but what can’t be mistaken is his searing honesty. Gatefold digipack with lyrics. JBk WASUREMONO Are You OK? se… slow evolution?

When does a change warrant a new model name? I wrote in my last ‘Off The Leash’ column how, back in the old days, a product like the Quad II might have a lifespan of years, or even decades. What isn’t generally revealed is what happens during those long runs. Pick up any owner’s manual and, at the back, you’ll read how the maker reserves the right to alter the product without notification. That’s what happened to the AR turntable and many of Quad’s original models, as I learned when working on the reissue of the former and researching the latter. Due to unforeseen circumstances, such as the loss of a supplier, manufacturers may be forced to change parts. It might be as minor as a new paint source for…

Can a £39 insect make all your CD files sound better than Hi-Res? Yes and no: Using the same equipment and a quality DAC, a 24/96 file (for example) will always sound better than a CD 16/44.1 file … but, even a single JitterBug will often allow a CD file to be more musical and more emotionally stimulating than a Hi-Res file without the benefit of a JitterBug. Noise is the problem. Real noise—the kind you can’t hear directly. Most often, the word “noise” is used to describe tape hiss or a scratch on a record, but these sounds aren’t noise; they are properly reproduced sounds that we wish weren’t there. Problem noise is essentially random, resonant or parasitic energy, which has no meaning. It can’t be turned into discrete sounds, but it…

lab report

MARK LEVINSON N°5805 Rated at 125W/8ohm but delivering 2x148W and 2x245W into 8/4ohm loads, respectively, the N°5805 has sufficient headroom to accommodate bursts of 174W and 328W into 8/4ohm loads under dynamic conditions (10msec, <1% THD). This is limited to 305W and 172W into lower 2/1ohm loads [see Graph 1, below]. Distortion increases slightly with frequency from 0.014-0.038% (20Hz-20kHz) but remains very consistent with power output over the rated 125W range. The response is very extended with–1dB points at 1Hz-49kHz (–3.5dB/100kHz) but noise – even if this is an innocuous ‘white noise’ – is a little below average, leading to an A-wtd S/N ratio of 78dB (re. 0dBW). ML’s ‘Precision-Link II’ DAC stage confers a near-total suppression of correlated jitter (<5psec across all sample rates), a low 0.0003-0.0014% distortion (20Hz-20kHz re. 0dBFs)…

behind the music with hi-fi news & record review

1990 Weatherall lays the original’s wistful vocal over a loping Balearic beat and Saint Etienne’s ‘Only Love Can Break Your Heart (A Mix Of Two Halves)’ is a hit 1990 The original track may have been a slab of guitarbased indie sonic mayhem, but Weatherall turns My Bloody Valentine’s ‘Soon’ into a smash dancefloor single 1991 The remix that re-launched Primal Scream, ‘Loaded’ sees Weatherall in charge at a recording studio for the first time. The song is a UK Top 20 hit 1993 Leftfield teamed up with ex-Sex Pistol frontman John Lydon for ‘Open Up’. Weatherall’s ‘I Hate Pink Floyd Mix’ becomes another club classic 1993 Following his co-founding of The Sabres Of Paradise, Weatherall has a hit with ‘Smokebelch II (Beatless Mix)’ – a chillout fave 1993 Weatherall strips away the vocal for One Dove’s ‘Breakdown Sabres Mix (Squire…

intro for integra

Avid HiFi has doubled the number of integrated amplifiers its sells by introducing the £7000 Integra, sibling to the almost-twice-the-price Sigsum. Despite the significant price saving, Avid says that its new ‘entry-level’ design espouses the same design philosophy and emphasis on sound quality. The 25kg Integra offers a switchable gain MM/MC phono input – derived from Avid’s Pellar phono preamp – alongside four unbalanced line-level inputs, and is rated to deliver 90W/8ohm. Much of the reason for its weight lies in the substantial unregulated power supply, which marries a 750VA transformer with an impressive total of 80,000μF of reservoir capacitance.
