TWICE in my kortbroek years, we travelled in the cheapest cabin in a Union-Castle mailship to visit relatives in East London, and on arrival off the Buffalo River, I watched as the ancient pilot tug, Mary, came out to deliver the pilot. Also of interest were the tugs F Schermbrucker (that, in February 1963, sank after being holed while assisting the Norwegian freighter Thorsdrake) and ES Steytler, both sisterships to Cape Town’s TH Watermeyer and John X Merriman on which I had enjoyed many tug rides. F Schermbrucker was refloated and after an extensive refit, resumed service.
